Anything that includes 'could be a simple fix' in the description is about the biggest red flag known to mankind. In this case, it's better replaced by 'almost certainly near impossible to fix, if not completely impossible'.
Interestingly, in the 90's I worked with a Sony 32-track studio recorder - which recorded onto tapes the size of a small suitcase. The machine itself weighed over a 100KG.
It could record 32 analogue tracks or 32 digital tracks - we used the digital mode to store data as this machine was the fastest recorder on the planet at the time - no disk could keep up with it.
