In brief: I'm looking ata Roksan Kandy MKIII Amp/CDp and MA RS6 speakers.I've seen the Amp and CDp go for £350 &400 ex-dem, and the speakers £400 2ndhand.

This is quite far below the rrp of £500 for Amp and CDpeach and £600 for the RS6.Would I be able to realistically haggle that sort of reduction on new kitwith an indep dealer?

I don't know the world of dealerships and haggling over audio equipment so feel free to snort and spray your coffee over your screen and keyboard with mirth at my possible naivety in hoping for such a reduction, and after that, can you let me know?

The best you can hope for is probably some free cable. Otherwise buy ex-dem or s/hand.

discounts can depend on brands, some brands will tell you no discounts, discount and they wont supply, some brands offer more discounts than others, your lucky to get 10% one mainsteam.onhigh end there is more movement,I think they'd be happier to throw in some cables than discount.

The dealer margin on these items will be about 45%. From that they have to pay their operating costs (rates, power, wages, advertising expenses etc)and then make enough profit to reinvest in new stock & grow the business (not easy in current climate) Having said that, from now running into the summer months is the best time to get a deal. You might find, by shopping around, someone looking to clear these items to make room for new stock for the next season (ie september) You might get someone to discount 10 maybe 15% on these items especially if you are ready to part with cash now. Trouble is with people doing this and getting dems before buying from the net, dealers are struggling. There will come a time when there won't be a nearby dealer with a decent range of good stuff to play to you. (some would say that time is already here) Do try to make sure you've listened to a few options before choosing. Disregard what the magazines recommend. They really don't know what they are talking about. Any of them. Disregard to a degree what you learn from this or similar websites. You are the one who has to live with this stuff. Use sites like this to draw up a list of options and then try to hear them with some music you know (and some you don't)

My recommendation would be to buy exdem or second hand anyway. You'll get more for your money.

It is for specialist HiFi in the UK. Where chains of shops are buying as a group it is considerably more.

Obviously if you are a chain you have more buying power, that's obvvious,if you are dealer direct with the manufacture you can get 40%,but as in the case here,if you dealing with distribution companies it is much less.

The mark up on roksan/naim/MA/linn in Australia was all about 40-45%.

That all went through a distributor, and was within 10% of the UK retail pricel.

If UK dealers can't get the same deal straight from manufacturers, or UK distrubuters it's rather rediculous.

Perhaps Spain is not quite so good for the dealer, but the in the UK their markup is surely 45% average, and even so, as murry said, the potential profit isn't so great (because of the various costs).
