Acoustic Singer Songwriters

We old farts often have the temerity to suggest that the true test of a system is how well it handles one man and his guitar. Thats acoustic music to you;). Well who are these stringpluckers of who we speak. Well my reco would be anything by Nick Drake and if forced to choose I'd go for "Bryter Later".

Now anyone who's idea of music involves an amplifier and dry ice should take note as there will be some cracking recommendations along soon. By the way alot ofthese albums i suspect will currently be going dirt cheap in the current HMV sale . So prick up those ears:p

Lovely jubley, my favorite sort of music. Right here goes:

Anything by Beth Orton :eek:j:a 'must see' live too.

Tracy Chapman, latest stuff is best imo.

Suzanne Vega, again a great live act.

Anything by Tom Mcrae

Antonio Forcione (Naim Label so great recording)

Off the top of my head these are my favorites, granted not all strictly acoustic but have the close mic'd guitar and vocals.

Oh and Nirvana MTV unplugged.

Apart from Nick Drake, not a huge fan of the genre, . But from a Hifi perspective would have to say 12 Songs by Neil Diamond is a great album and musically a pleasent listen, also Jack johnson is quite pleasent.

thought you didn't like 12 songs:?. Did you warm to it? Know i did. I like Nebraska but no really audiophile quality. Clapton unplugged is OK

Talking singer/ songwriter you are tending to overlap into the folk field. Including that lot, there are quite a few truly classy names to add to this list:

Dick Gaughan

Bert Jansch

Ralph McTell

Christy Moore

Paul Brady

Alan Taylor

Eric Andersen (around since the 60s and criminally overlooked)

Phil Ochs

Pete Yorn

Fred Neil

Paul Siebel

Duncan Browne

Harvey Andrews

Tim Buckley would probably not be out of place here either.

Joni Mitchell

'Laughing' Len (Leonard Cohen)

Two chaps I've been getting to know recently are;

Archer Prewitt - Wilderness

Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans

Both are part of this new-wave folk scene that is establishing itself, top knotch!

Not an acoustic artist as such, but I can highly recommend Neil Young's unplugged album.

Nick Drake - yeah!

Dylan - Live 1966 1st album.

Kelly Joe Phelps - Lead Me On; Roll Away the Stone & Shine-eyed Mr Zen. Oh and Tap the Red Cane Whirlwind.

Dick Gaughan - excellent!

Nic Jones or Martyn Simpson in a more English folky vein, altho` Simpson also does some more bluesy stuff.

Rainer - Nocturnes, Worried Spirits, Alpaca Lips & Live at the Performance Centre.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Master & Everyone, & I See a Darkness.

Damien Jurado - On My Way to Absence & Where Shall you Take Me (some of this is a bit more band).

Any John Fahey or Taj Mahal.

Or on a Malian desert blues vibe: Ali Farka Toure - Red & Green or Niafunke.

To be going on with...
