The recent Screening of Cream at the Albert Hall opened my eyes to Ginger Bakers brilliance behind the behind the drums.

He plays a typical 70's style 20 minute solo, keeping perfect time, going all round the kit, without looking like he's trying or breaking into a sweat.

This prompted me to reach for Led Zep's The Song Remains the Same to listen to Bonzo's solo on Moby Dick.

Now I always held this bit of skin bashing to be one of the best, but on further listening its not a patch on Ginger. The timing is all over the place, speeding up & slowing down.

So who is your favourite?

Phil "Philthy" Taylor

Lars Ullrich

Bill Ward

Phil Collins

Other suggetions gratefully received.

I think Bonzo's playing something else though - hard to define but you just can't imagine any other drummer behind Zeppelin.

Never been convinced about Ulrich - that Metallica filmed showed what a control freak he really is and all that posturing when recording the drums - not for me.

For me Dave Lombardo is the best thrash/metal drummer - awesome.

But I like Bonzo - he was a real rock drummer, and lived the lifestyle as well (sadly), I can never look at s red snapperagain in the same light (I've heard the story with several different fish but I think this one gets mentioned the most).

Jimmy Chamberlain deserves a mention for rock drummers of recent times. Formerly of Smashing Pumpkins, easily the best drummer I’ve seen live and some wonderfully creative drumming on the early Pumpkins albums.

Would shit out Phil Collins for breakfast.

Neil Peart from Rush is a stunning tub thumper. I suggest you watch his solo on the R30 DVD. The guy takes the piss.

I love Collins for what he's done, pushing the drums as a lead instrument that is. He may not be the most technical drummer in the world but its not just all about that...Steve Vai is a better guitarist technically than Hendrix but is he a greater guitarist?

Edit: Nicko McBrain from Maiden is a good'un also.

For me only Buddy Rich, or Billy Cobham come close, Peart has them all licked, and he's effortless to watch, man was born to it, and has taken it further than most.

Partial to Bill Bruford too.

Bur Neil Peart is the Professor

Neil Peart has to be up there as does John Bonham.

Cozy Powell deserves a mention but a touch commercial for me.

As for the best looking drumer, the one from the Corrs

Bonham must be there or thereabouts.

Honourable mention for Dave Grohl, `specially on QotSA's Songs for the Deaf, and also Jaki Liebezeit of Can for his "circular" drumming style.
