There’s a letter in the latest WHF, in which some guy asking for advice has got a Naim CD5, Cyrus 6, and Quad 11s (I presume on the basis of them all having 5 stars at the time), and surprise surprise he finds it far too bright, particularly on modern recordings.

So what’s the brightest (or most unbearable) system you’ve ever heard, or can think of?

It was back in the 90s the first Naim CDP through Naim amps into Naim speakers. It was in a hotel room and shrieked. You could see even the guys from Salisbury were embarrassed!

Nastiest (smeared, sibilant, ragged treble, and the rest of it was no great shakes either) system I've heard recently was the Naim dem at the Scottish show late last year. Speakers were big Totems. Utterly horrible sound. £47k...

worst I heard was way back, a long gone dealers intro system, a long forgotten sony CD player, Pioneer A400 (I think) amp, into some Marantz speakers. I think it was the cheapest 'brand' name components he could lay hands on. The pub down the road feared for the stock of glassware.

all monitor audio speakers,

all the Marantz cd players i've heard.

to be honest i find a lot of systems too bright. but i think most manufacturers make their kit bright to make you belive it gives you more detail.

Yamaha NS10M. Ubiquitous studio monitors, +7db peak at 1500Hz. The pair I had removed paint at thirty paces.

art emotions, driven by a pathos hybrid with a nas spacedaek at the manchester show this year. even the missus walked out saying it hurt her ears.
