Anyone fancy talking about cider and making it?

I can advise you on making it and show you my orchard / ciders.

I like great cheap cider enjoyed responsibly/amazed that world does not realise how easy it is to make from others' rejected rotten apples - but it would put all overpriced alcohol contexts out of business ...

Got a cider making kit for Christmas off my daughter but not made it yet I think it's one of those just add water things. My taste in cider keeps changing at the moment it's aspalls premium cru which is the best I've tasted so far and only £5 for 3 bottles in most supermarkets. Will keep trying to find a better one but it will be very hard to beat

I like Hogan's, which is just down the road from where I'm from (I know that's not particularly grammatical).

Not many places sell it though.

Is it easy to produce 'diy' cider? We have a tree that produces many more apples than we can use (we normally put all the surplus out in front of the house for people to help themselves) and had a vague idea to try cider making, but have never got around to it. The variety we have is Blenheim orange which is really a cooker though not as sour as some so can be eaten fresh at a push.

if you like cider and are ever in London, go to the Cider Tap at Euston station - it always carries about 12-15 ciders, and some perry along with a range of bottled ciders.

The associated beer place - Euston Tap is pretty good as well. Both are located just at the road (bus) entrance to Euston station.

Would be very interested in finding out how difficult or easy it is to make your own cider . I like the still versions and would really like to be able to make my own . There are a number of ways of getting access to cheap apples but presume that they have to be only certain varieties that you can use . So if the original poster has any sugestions or advise would love to have a bit of a read first .

An update on this, for anyone thinking of going to the Cider Tap at Euston - I hear its closing, to be replaced by the owners with something called "Northern Tap" a beer place specialising in Northern beer.

My favourite is Henry Westons Vintage Cider but I rarely drink more than one bottle because it's very strong.

we used to take our community group to a fantastic apple orchard farm near ledbury which were made into cider I think . so sad he cut the lot down

as uneconomic . be great to hear how you get on as its my fav drink

Hi, I went last year for their first, if the weather is kind its a nice chilled out way to spend a weekend.

Been visiting Broom Farm for 10 years for their anual festival and general camping, take them there, tell Mike you know big Jack from Malvern.

The pub attached does excellent food.

You just reminded me that I totally forgot about a similar festival in Dorset last month. Next year maybe.

There's a great little shop that opened up near me recently though: The Cider Shack. Website's not up to much at the moment, but if you're near Yeovil and like cider then it's well worth a visit. They have a great selection of local farm ciders that you can buy in whatever quantity you want - they supply plastic containers from 1L up or you can bring your own. They also have some in those bag-in-boxes (like wine), and plenty of bottled cider. They'll let you sample the local stuff before you buy too, and are planning a 'tasting room' too. Guy who runs it is very friendly

Obviously not as cheap as visiting the farms and buying direct, but from personal experience some of them are well out in the sticks and/or difficult to find.

I agree with the above

. Burrow Hill is only a few miles from me and the farm is a lovely place - the barn that holds the big barrels is ace, and they offer everything from apple juice to apple brandy.

In fact I haven't been there for a couple of years, must make a visit.

Anyone on this thread that lived in Brighton in the early to late 1970's might remember the spit and sawdust scrumpy cider only pub called the Full Moon.

It was a small place with no seats and sawdust on the floor.

A pint of somerset scrumpy cost 13p and 2p for a shot of blackcurrant.

You had to have the blackcurrant in it because it was undrinkable without.

You downed it in one and went out for the night.

 Proper nice value-cider safely-enjoyed a treat.

 Each day for breakfast I have an apple/sometimes + bran-oats, and ferment enjoyably.
