Thank you, if you are not considering them « laid back » then that’s unfortunately too risky to buy it without listening and given my hearing constraints.
I have to be very cautious …

Thank you @BarneysDad2, for you there is no risk of having too much details/emphasis, or being bothered by the sound ?
What cartridge would you recommend ?
Too much detail/emphasis can be fatiguing. Both me and my wife have tinnitus. Hers is now more pronounced and so there are sounds that she doesn’t even heard that I can hear like cicadas sounds (the insect) at night time in Portugal; I can hear them but she cannot. But if the HiFi is too forward sounding she notices as do I. Therefore I would be inclined to buy a less detailed sounding turntable but the cartridge will make most of the difference but you will need to make sure that your phonostage will work well with it ie it has the settings that you need.

That’s exactly the situation I’m facing. I cannot handle any forwardness in the sound . Then the LP12 could be a safer bet as far as I understand.

An older LP12 with something like a Nima arm and a Nagaoka MP300 could be great and way, way, under budget. You would easily be able to sell it on if not happy. I am friends with a former Linn dealer who now does LP12 restorations. He told me recently that some people who bought the newest LP12 sold them again after hearing one of the earlier ones as they have a warmer more organic sound.

Age has an effect on our hearing as we know. I absolutely hate anything that’s analytical. You don’t need to have analytical kit to have a truly rewarding sound.
Funnily enough, my favourite LP12 I had was an original early 70’s which I put a Roksan Nima on with a Grado reference cartridge 😊
I have managed to achieve something similar with the Walker CJ55, silver note arm, DC upgrade and ATVM95ML. I am listening to it more than my £5000 turntable combination.

@jigsaw - on your cartridge question (and assuming that you are looking for an MC type and have a suitable phono stage) perhaps consider something like a Shelter 501 III, which is not a forward-sounding or bright cartridge and may be suitable for your hearing (my sympathies by the way - like many on here I also have the tinnitus but not the hyperacusis). Much will also depend on matching to whatever arm you end up with of course although I think it's pretty average for weight and compliance so should work in most arms.

At first, I am looking for an MM because I don’t have any MC stage but also I’ve never heard any MC cartridge.
Some people, given my constraints, have recommended me to move to MC cartridge.
So if that’s the way to go, I am perfectly open to that …

Ive heard a Hyperspace and Brook's Spacedeck and I couldnt think of a better choice for you.

They are desirable and selling it on would be no problemo.

Thanks @Non-Smoking Man Can you please elaborate why you think it should be a perfect match for me ?
Selling in Uk should be fine but not in France, it’s not very well-known.

You don’t need an MC. It’s just more things to think about like a new phonostage or an SUT. There are plenty of great MM or MI cartridges out there.

Jack can give his opinion but I will give mine. I would choose the NA over a Linn it if was my only choice and I was based on the UK. Sonically the NA is more neutral and easier to set up and maintain. I nearly bought both the NA and LP12 but ended up with a Luxman PD171 but that’s far too much of a risk to take as I don’t have your ears. It’s best to play safe with recommendations based on your location and ear situation. The thing is though if you didn’t like the Linn or NA what would you buy?

Both turntables are benign unlike my Raven AC and so long as you choose a forgiving arm and cartridge then you can’t go wrong.

I will listen to the LP12 on next Friday and also later in the month as I will visit some friends. If I don’t like it, maybe I will think again about the NA and maybe will take the risk of buying it without listening to it … I don‘t know that’s a tough question and tough choice !
What brings you to the Luxman ?

Linn dealers and or friends will probably not have a Nagaoka cartridge. They will probably have an ‘exciting’ cartridge but it doesn’t mean that the deck isn’t suitable. Many Linn dealers have Dynavector and a 10x5 would be a good choice as it has an MM suitable output and a warm sound.

The other thing is to compare the Linn to something else in the shop (preferably of a known quantity) because it might be the amp or speakers that may cause you not to like the sound. Linn dealers aren’t likely to have Pass Labs or Harbeths.

I will be able to bring my Art Audio preamp (only used as phono) + my Thorens.
For the speakers he has Graham Ls3/5 that may be close, or at least not too far from my Harbeth.

I put a deposit on an SME turntable but when I arrived at the dealer saw the Luxman. We compared them and I preferred the Luxman. The Luxman is a good all-rounder. It has detail like the SME is funky a bit like an LP12 and has drive a bit like an idler and also has a bit of warmth. And it looks amazing.

Agreed - if you're not already set up for MC then that's extra cost to consider. I was working on an (incorrect) assumption, but concur that sticking to a good MM is maybe the way to go in this case. Dynavector is a good shout, and from personal ownership experience I'd also say that the Goldring 1042 is a potential choice and is not a sharp-sounding or forward cartridge. As a bit of a curveball, could a good MI like a Soundsmith Carmen fit the bill too? I've not heard one but their reputation is one of refinement without exaggeration. Apparently they are distributed via L'Audio Distribution in France:

Which Thorens do you have? And which cartridge? On the About You page on the Wam if you update this with your details it will help people helping you.

Edit: waiting for you to respond that it’s a Thoren TD124 and my reply saying don’t change anything 😂😂 but seriously let us know what you have an if it is currently causing you any discomfort
