New CD Player choice?

I'm considering a new CD player. I currently have a Kenwood DP-3080 which is by no means high end, but does the job and was a best buy when released. I'm slightly sceptical that CD players can sound that different compared to the vast differences you can have with turntables and cartridge choices etc..

So anyway, I'm looking for something sub-£200 and considering either an Arcam Alpha 7 (around £100 used) or Marantz CD63 Ki Sig (around £150 used).

Do you think I will get much improvement with these models?

Can anyone else recommend models that can be had for less than £200?

used CD is always a dodgy choice due to laser failure etc, for that money I'd get a Marantz or Denon less than 1 year old. DACS have got a lot better recently.

What kind of music do you listen to?Those Arcam Alpha players can be a slow in the bass.

Arcam CD72 go for sub £200 and are very nice (my bro' has one) or if you look at the richer sounds site you could probably get a new Marantz/Denon!

Although if the Kenwood is deemed to be a good transport then just buy a new DAC!

Meridian 206. Hard to beat at £500 secondhand let alone the going rate of £150.
Oneof the best 'old' cd players I've heard

. doesn't sound too far off the pace of modern players costing lots more. Cracking 2nd hand buy.

I quite like the Cambridge Audio Azur 540c at 200 squid (equipped with a nice Wolfson24-bit/192kHz DAC)...

Another excellent choice. The Cambridge players are stonking value for money if buying a new player.

My 2 suggestions have been mentioned, so I'll just add to the positive comments for the 206 and xa20es, had both and the 206 is a no brainer at what they fetch

Are the 206's really as good as you say? it looks like quite an old player - can it compete with similar players now at £500 or even £200?

What does everyone think of the Marantz CD63 Ki Sig - I'm wondering if the price of this is justified over the 63SE..

In a word...yes, I have own lots of Marantz cdp in the past (and present) the 63KI is hard to beat at the price (£120 - £175) the advance over the standard 63 is quite obvious, the KI have more details and better timing + you can alway resale the KI for the price you paid for!

they are superb! for the s/h prices they go for, they are a definite no brainer. ok, it is quite old in hifi terms, but will still wipe the floor with many newtop kit. superb as a transport too, so you can play around with dacs.
