I bought a step-up transformer off eBay using UTC A-21 transformers. While not doubting the quality of the transformers. I have had variable results with it, but basically have had trouble getting enough gain. Thinking it was a system-matching problem, I put it in the classifieds.

Subsequently I have had some feedback that these transformers might not be ideally suited for phono use; it seems the most commonly used UTCs for phono step-up are A10, A11 and A12. The specs are:

Pri. 50/200/250/500/600: Sec 50/200/250/500/600 20-20KHz

Can these be wired for SUT purposes in some way? Or could they usefully be used for another application?

Thanks for the help.

Surely one of the slide rule gurus here can answer this one?

I don't know the txs but for step-up you want a low impedance on one side and high on the other. Small coil to big coil = small voltage to big voltage.

i'm not a guru but in the highest step up ratio (50 to 600) you can get it wired, your transformer has about 1:3.5 amplification which is unsufficient, hence not enough gain... other taps are even worse with less gain

Thanks for the advice chaps. I think I'll stick it on eBay and hopefully someone will be able to make use of the transformers. I'll chalk it up to experience!
