Sorry if this has been dealt with elsewhere. I would like to rip my dvd collection to allow max flexibility: I would like to be able to fit this in with a household containing some Apple-centrics and other who use PS3s and laptops to view movies. Is there a single ripping program which will allow me to rip to a single format which will work via ios, apple tv and ps3 (4?). Also (assuming i run this on a QNAP NAS do I need any particular media server software?

That might be tough, unless you jailbreak your ATV.

My favourite ripping software is MakeMKV, and I know Handbrake is well regarded too.

Thabnks browellm, I'm tryig to work out how I can make the files easily available round the house. I guess the problem tryig to work out a format that everyone can use. Am I right in thinking that MkV is uncompressed? What will it run on?

Alternatively would I be right in thinking that I could use a media renderer on a laptop (or even maybe ipad?) to access files in arbitrary format on a NAS and send out an HDMI signal. If so I guess that would do it.

You might find DVDDecrypter useful to help rip stuff. Good luck with Disney films though..... Maybe buy AnyDVD (I think that's what it's called) And you'll need a beefy PC unless you're patient.

For the freeware, HandBrake and Free DVD Converter are all good choices. And for the paid ware, I think you can try Leawo DVD Ripper. I has profiles for various formats and devices, and can well meet your demands. You can know more about it in this tutorial.

make mkv is great....quick and easy

...don't know about playing back on apple and playstation though?

there are programs where you can select the device you wish to play back on and the dvd will be ripped to work on that device...think dvdfab will do that

....from what I can remember though that process can be slow

Thanks everyone. I have played with a few things. For the time being I am trying out Handbrake with the added decryption file from VLC. I like Make MkV but I'm not sure i wan to make this a two stage process to get to the desired format. On the other hand it occurs to me that using the quickest rip to hardrive and then batch converting might be the most efficient scheme because you don't have to stand there feeding the machine during the conversion. Hmmmm. If so make Mkv may be the very thing.....

My experimentation so far suggests that handbrake standard and high setting Mp4 seem to play on PS3 via windows media player, which is encouraging.

I have a Samsung Tab 8, lets say i use Make MkV to rip a dvd to a micro sd, insert the card into my tablet. Do i need a player or can the tablet just play it from the sd card. Is that over simplifing it. ta

I have ripped over 600 movies to Hard Disc. I am running a PC with a swap out caddy which enables me to use my 8 x 2TB drives depending on which film I intend watching. I do not use a NAS device or similar - I just copy a whole bunch of films that are current and then stream them from the PC which has the folder shared on a CAT 6 backbone.

I have used AnyDVD to rip the Movie and then use a special version of PowerDVD to play the movie off the HDD.

I have used Handbrake - but this came along long after my early entry to DVD ripping. PM me if you want more info?

It is also possible to Rip the DVDs as ISO files and then mount them using the SlySoft's free mounting software - Clone DVD - Probably the best virtual drive software, Virtual CloneDrive allows you to enjoy the freedom of a virtual drive and is completely free.

Guys quick question, what is the best format for ripping to and storing on a Nexus 7? MEPG4 or AVI?

You should choose what suits you.

I choose not to rip DVDS etc for which I have paid/which I can re-purchase.

I generally save-archive X3 +++ stuff I haven't bought in a format I can burn to DVD+RW/VCD etc.

Recently, I have moved from 'religiously' converting my otherwise-unavailable video to MPEG2, (for quick cheap VCD burning), and being quite happy to save to HDD X3 +++ as AVI or MPEG etc 4. All digital can be converted to whatever if necessary ... Very little digital can be converted beneficially to analogue though...

Others have different 'needs'/choices.

Check out specialist vid. sites for pros and cons of each format blah blah.

I admit that I have happily enjoyed results from MKV/have secret docs. I refer to if I need to utilise it.

After reading this thread I have been trying Any DVD and Make MKV with a view to putting the discs out of sight in the spare bebroom and playing from a USB HD.

On the 2011 computer MakeMKV took about five hours to deal with a dsic while AnyDVD + Clone DVD took about 9 minutes on the 2005 computer!!!

The problem comes when playing back via the USB socket on my Bluray player (used as a sort of server). There is a big gap at file change while when I was loaned a single file versin of a film it played smoothly all th e way through.

So to the questions:

- is there a way of creating a single file version using any particular ripping software?

- alternatively, what do i need to get "gapless" playback from a PC or MAC?

Often, good modern fast processor/GFX/memory/PC-HDD/prog can fractionalise time to rip what cannot be bought ...
