Speakers that are deeper than they are tall?

Most standmount speakers are taller than they are deep but a few (e.g some Elacs, my new Q Acoustics Concept 20s) are the other way round.

Any idea why some designers do this (but most don't)? What might they be trying to achieve in terms of sound quality? Or is it merely a cosmetic preference?

Just curious...

One reason reason I could think to do this other than as a design statement would be to increase cabinet volume & maybe keeping drivers at a predetermined ideal height for the design/configuration. I guess it could also aid stability rather than adding larger cabinet volume vertically. :?

Yes, the frontal proportions still give the impression of a small box in such designs at least initially.

There could be technical reasons too - the panel shape will influence the panel resonance, internal standing waves, and the proximity of internal reflecting surfaces to the drivers will no doubt factor in some designs with deep cabinets.
