Michael Stoute won his 6th Derby on Saturday at the ripe old age of 76, and after a long gap to his previous win in 2010 (with Workforce).

Congratulations are due, not least because he no longer has the firepower and rich owners of bygone days. (Highpriced yearlings are now the province of rich owners and powerful stables such as Ballydoyle and the Godolphin operation.)

Desert Crown, only twice raced due to niggling training issues at 2, powered through the race and put it to bed two furlongs out, echoing his impressive Trial win in the Dante.

The lesser known Richard Kingscote 'executed' in the saddle - a much underrated jock (well, he was!).

The racing world will be pleased for Sir Michael, who recently lost his lifelong partner. He is widely regarded as a good egg and this win re-establishes him at the top. That's a good thing.

My wife and I, and some friends always make the trip to York in May for the Dante meeting, specifically Thursday when the Dante Stakes is run.
Desert Crown was very impressive on the day, winning well. Needless to say I'd backed something else which is probably still running.
