Since @StingRay's not going to bite and make this post I will :)

What are your top 10 Greatest Albums of all time?

These aren't your Favorite albums, but rather the albums that you recognise as great, they might be genre defining, they might be widely acknowledged as groundbreaking, they might be highly influential albums that had a big impact on other musicians.

What ever the reason for including an album don't sit on the fence, let's see a ranked list!

if you can please put a "-" between the artist and album it will make it a bit easier to stick everything into a single list, that way we can see a WAM ranking at the end.

Here's mine as a starter for 10

  1. Robert Johnson - King of the Delta Blues Singers
  2. Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley
  3. Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
  4. Bob Dylan - Bringing it All Back Home
  5. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
  6. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
  7. The Clash - London Calling
  8. Kraftwerk - Autobahn
  9. Nirvana - Nevermind
  10. NWA - Straight Outta Compton

This was really hard to do, I wanted to include so many other things, Brian Eno created a genre, The Beatles were so influential, Stone Roses were the height of a scene, Bowie, Miles Davies, I could go on....

Dylan's in there but personally I just don't like his music, can't argue what an influence he's been though.

Yes I've even included some rap! NWA had such an impact, but I could have gone for other earlier acts instead

for me Robert Johnson's at the top because he's directly influenced so many of the biggest bands and best guitarists of all time.

just picking 10 is very hard isn't it!

there's albums here already that I've never heard, can't wait to try them out.

a few different choices that I could have made myself as well.

@StingRay I could easily have picked your list. 1 thing I did struggle with was including Pet Sounds or Sgt Peppers, I decided to just include pet sounds because Peppers was so influenced by it and it gave me space to put something else in.

there's already some interesting commonalities.

I could probably squeeze out a list of my 10 favourite albums but not a list of the most genre defining or influential. Many of them will probably not be to my taste and I'm sure there are some I've never even listened to.

It's very hard to be objective about music. I'd leave it to Rolling Stone and let the forum pick their favourites.

Oh yes, they are blinded by charts and sales and popularity which is why it moves with the times to include the likes of Taylor Swift.

I think everyone is afraid of only having to pick 10!
Be brave it's only music and everyone knows it'll be a different 10 later today.

It's only a forum it's not like you're telling the world.

Besides I was trying to make a list of stuff I love without adding in the usual culprits, you know the Rumours and the dark Sides of the Moon et al  :D

I have to say I can't fathom your thinking here. You want us to discuss the 10 best albums ever, but they can't be albums you own & love? If you don't like Dylan (you are not alone), how can you judge his influence?

I am not being contrary for the sake of it, I just don't understand your thought process.

I see now I did it all wrong, I should have listed the same old stuff that all these lists list (!)

Or a load of influential/been around for ages guys that I don't really like.

Not really, why did you list Animals, not in my opinion one of their greatest albums or very influential.

It was a bit of fun I was trying to avoid the usual culprits/obvious choices.

I listed Animals because I like it, it isn't influential because i didn't read the OP's post properly.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter what I listed or what anybody else lists for that matter.

Maybe I should have been all worthy and list the stuff that I cannot stand but that may have been influential Miles, Coltrane, Clapton, Prince, The Monkees, Spice Girls  I forgot Hendrix, and Cream, there you go influential.
