Just wondering if anyone might know anything about TRIO  KA 4002 integrated’s. Very sadly, my good friend Richard recently passed away. Richard had a really nice system and some other bits and bobs. His partner has found the above amp and doesn’t want it. If it’s worth anything, I’ll put an ad in the classifieds. Any idea of price? A project for someone. Many thanks in advance!

I had a Kenwood (Trio) KR-720 for many years and it never put a foot wrong. This is newer than your Trio (by appearance) so I cannot vouch for the merits of the KA-4002. Generally, Trio made some reliable products.

Great Brand back in the day . They then morphed with Kenwood where it subsequently went downhill.

It never morphed the company was always originally Kasuga then renamed Trio.  The name Kenwood was invented by Kasuga as being the combination of "Ken", a name common to Japan and North America that had been tested and proven acceptable to American consumers in the name of Kenmore appliances, and "Wood", referring to the durable substance.  In 2008 it amalgamated with JVC ..
They made some fine amps such as the L07 monoblocks, the TL922 linear amp and the A 1001 to name but a few.    Well made and from my experience great reliability.  https://www.encyclopedia.com/books/politics-and-business-magazines/kenwood-corporation

I owned Some Kenwood and it was more a bang for your buck brand in the late 80's but reliability was an issue . Had an amp and cassette deck give up 6 moths after the warranty .

This design of Trio I recall from my early days selling Hifi.  It certainly still looks great to my eyes - functional, clear and purposeful.  I can’t recall the sound being anything special, tbh, but they were decent enough, bearing in mind 15 Wpc was quite good back then.  This was not the most popular basic model iirc.

Here are two pages from the 1973 Hifi Yearbook.  One has a picture, the other the spec.  I’ve no idea about prices other than using eBay or Hifi Shark as a guide.  The $64,000 question is does it work properly?

Many thanks for all your responses, much appreciated! I’ll be able to check the amp out re working/condition etc in a couple of weeks.

And they made great tuners of course - didn't imagine I'd ever purchase a Kenwood product but found a tuner that was the right shape, size, price and colour - and although I ended up having to change the plug (see my Kenwood tuner post if interested) it does appear to be a quality item - from the 90s I believe so probably the oldest component I have.

As a student I lusted after the KA2002 as it was, for its day, quite affordable. It was however always just sightly out of reach so I was never able to actually afford one. I recall getting quite excited as it was a clear 'upgrade' on the KA 2000, power rising from 15 to 17 watts per Channel.

Things were changing rapidly in those days, barely 3 or 4 years later I was running a modified Phase Linear 400 with a measured output of 273 watts per channel. Really livened up a pair od Spendor BC1s.

I had one of those, bought after may Amstrad IC2000 blew up.

It was OK as I recall, then when I started work I replaced the Trio with a Cambridge P60.

One of the early Amstrad amplifiers had a coil, a loose inductor of copper wire, quite thick but probably no more than a couple of dozen windings that just sat above the main circuit board.

It could be twisted slightly, by hand, so the axis/orientation of the coil could be varied to a degree to minimise RF interference.

State of the art in the early '70s.
