My first Scalford and I got some good ideas from various rooms, for my system. Thanks to everyone. My favourite rooms:

JVS - Number one for me. Very nice Acapella speakers and my other half liked the Pass Labs amps and wants to get some (she judged these by eye though). Everything sounded effortless. Love those tweeters.

Steelhull - Again the speakers were outstanding (Grimm) with the full frequency range tested. This was other Halfs favourite.

Griffi - Nice streaming solution and lush sounding Zingali speakers. Very good.

JVS's system was the best overall sound at the show for me. It sounded much better than last year and was possibly the only system where there was a correlation between cost and performance.

The DSD versus PCM demo was very interesting. I preferred he PCM for it superior dynamics and timing, however the DSD did have a nice 'analogueness' to it.

Serge's experimental omnis were also very interesting. The omni thing definitely does something appealing with classical music.

Dean's Snels sounded great as usual, and these along with the system with the old Wharfedales made me realise that there's a lot more to getting enjoyable music than, bass, treble, detail, imaging etc. that some system possess in spades but are somehow rather uninvolving.

Thanks to the organisers and exhibitors!!!

“Thanks to the organisers and those who shared their systemswith us today.

I took away today that I have to learn more about digitalactive crossovers.

The speakers I enjoyed listening to most today was the LinnKatan in room 202 followed by the little Harbeths P3. The produce to my ears, asound that is fast and clear. I could have stayed much longer to enjoy themusic and conversation.

Great show - I took an hour or so out from demming to have a quick scout round the show, so inevitably missed a lot.

But ... fwiw ...

Some of the highlights for me - Devialet's rather wonderful and hyper-tech speakers in Serge's room (now there was a surprise) - a pleasure to chat with him as well and ogle once again his gorgeous vintage Yamaha receiver, Rick's Impulse H2 and his kindness in letting me have a gorgeous JVC receiver, meeting Mark YNWAN at last, Jim JVS's Acapella speakers - much more to my taste this year - great sound, the Lodgesound Rogers speakers and stunning reel to reel decks, and Stu's (Russ) horn hybrids were sounding better than ever, really good.

Lots of good sounds, lots of enthusiasm, and a really good vibe to it all.

Nice.

I never did meet up with Gary / gizza, though. :(

D'ya know, I had the same realisation, Jerry. I was trying to get to meet all of the guys I'd interacted with recently on here, and didn't make too bad a job of it. However, there are some I still have to meet and your were one that came to mind when I was reliving the experience last night. If the opportunity arises and my wife is planning to vacate the house for the day on a weekend, I'll arrange a bakeoff at my place. I'm also going to keep my beady eyes open for future bakeoffs here in the midlands so I may see you at one of those? :^

I quite agree, Kevin. His EAR Acute was nice too, having never heard one before.

It's fast becoming apparent that despite you having many faults, Kevin, your hearing and ability to recognise good sounding kit is not one of them :sofa: Great to be able to have a laugh and joke with so many lovely people... I think Wam memberships ought to be available on the NHS to help combat depression...or wait, should it be a requirement for something on the NHS to combat effects of the Wam... :dunno:

Cheers buddy, great to meet you yesterday

Event Opals filling a large room with ease. Very impressive from Crimsondonkey

I really enjoyed the horns this year. The Belvoir Room (JVS) was mind blowing but Chelseadave's AvanteGardes, Russ Abbot's home made horns and Cobler/Dipstick's Bastanis Wildhorns weren't far behind. PMAC's turntable porn and the wonderful Tune Audio Primes kept drawing me back as did Bandit Pilot's wonderfully integrated system, I could have stayed in there all day.

My pause for thought? I heard a lot of Io cartridges and enjoyed them all. mmm?

Well what fun that was!!

In contrast to last year everything worked when I plugged it in, no smoke and no electric shocks!! It was a good start to a great couple of days. After confirming that my system worked I enjoyed a few pints, some curry and some good company in various rooms. This is my favourite bit of the show, the rooms are much less crowded and there is more time to have a relax and listen to few choons and chinwag. The lodgeosound room was for me the best room that evening, sound aside it was simply wonderful to see these machines still working and still sounding spot on, I reminisced about using these types of decks back in the day and spent a lot of time with a silly grin on my face. If I'd have had to go home after that I'd have been happy TBH. I listened to some of the horns as well, again I was impressed, I've said before I'm not a natural fan of horn systems, but when everything else falls into place they do offer an ease which is seldom found elsewhere and lets face it, having the commitment to run massive horn speakers in a domestic setting is worthy of anyone's praise. The best for me was the Somerby room, very nice presentation, Good banter and lovely lovely plinths on both decks - anyone know what the plinths were?

After a poor night sleep I woke excited, had breakfast and ran back upstairs to move the furniture out and run a few room sweeps before the punters arrived. I suspected when I had arrived the day before and measured the room and ran a quick sim that it might work out OK, measuring confirmed it. The corners of the room collected some 35hz so I had to pull the speakers forward a bit and I popped the mattresses there which seemed to sort the worst of it. There was a little 60hz bump in the middle of the room where folk would have to sit so a 1q -3dB filter tamed that a bit but other than that no real need for room correction.

Having only just completed the speakers like the day before I was hearing most stuff along with the punters for the first time. I was a bit gutted that I had to sit at the side while they got to enjoy my shiny new speakers in the 'hotseat'! Even so I spent most of the day grinning like a cheshire cat and tapping my foot. A lot of folk were complementary in the extreme and a lot of folk left quickly which just goes to show the breadth of opinion this hobby engenders. Some folk returned a few time to ask further questions and showed a genuine interest in how it all worked, I can waffle about filters, FIR, baffle diffraction, driver damping etc all day (and did) so that was nice.

One man came in with his young son who wanted to listen to Jay-z as he liked Rap. After playing that I ran him through some Young-MC, NWA, De La Soul etc. He noted straight away how much more dynamics and light and shade and even soul these older recordings had - job done :)

Last year a lady actually cried in my room when I played her 'Stairway to Heaven'. This year I saw her and her husband in the corridor on one of my short trips out and almost dragged her to my room to have another go. It's funny how we can get fixated on things, but as conveying emotion is something that is very important to how we listen to music, I've often pondered over that lady crying and had wondered if I ever met her again would the new speakers be able to pull it off as well? I nearly cried myself when I saw a tear roll down her cheek. Ain't music great :)

We ended up with a funny selection of music in my room, I normally have a penchant for acoustic guitar and a voice, folk, and that sort of thing. However word seemed to get round that the speakers could do low and tight bass and folk kept turning up wanting to listen to Kraftwerk, daft punk, and Dub regge tracks. All good fun.

I only got to visit a few rooms myself during the day and they were all brilliant in their own way, not a duff sound amongst them. Edd9000, big ballsy huge sound, what's not to like. Grimm audio, refined, laid back, transparent, lush, everything I wanted them to be. Greybeards LS3/5a clones were lovely indeed, similar in many ways to the Grimm speakers in that see through precision, no bass at all obviously but it was actually a refreshing change, made me want to build some small speakers myself. That was about all I got time to have a reasonable listen to, I so much wanted to have a look at other things but hey ho.

All in all i'll definitely be back next year although I've no idea what I'll build.

Thanks to everyone who came with all thier kit and thanks to James for organising it all. Best audio show by miles.

Stefan

Olan proving that you shouldn't always play visitors music. Something somnambulant playing when I went into the room. System really strutting its stuff now back with his choices Art Alnico 8 really driving the room in HTM 1968's room.
:eek:ff: how very dare you :x ! That was one of my Durutti Column LPs! I did play 'Quad' by The Heads after foottapper asked me to play 'Smoke on the Water'. The look on some of the punter's faces was priceless!! If you are going to be raucous you might as well do it properly! :fly:

Yes, it was fair to say that Olan was playing quite an eclectic selection of music, ranging from Durutti Column via Jennifer Warnes to Deep Purple & the truly raucous The Heads.

The Heads were very funny - we were all in shock at the acoustic assault of it!

Still, this was one of the lovely things about Scalford; hosts were willing to play their music or to give your music a try in a relaxed, sociable way.

A great day.

Best regards, FT

.... and this was to be my trigger to remember what systems were good / what equipment was being show where, and especially a couple of people to thank

Happy to pay for postage and even to return it to you after I've finished (if you want).

It would make the show report far easier and quicker to write and far more interesting that just 'it was really really great'
