Tuesday 2nd May Wammers Album Club

Tracy Chapman - Matters of the Heart.

deck.jpg

Sorry I'm a bit late with the WAC this week I have been working all weekend and only remembered when I got home.

I had a quick think and went for this album because I've always liked her first album and I got a copy of this from Dean a few months ago and I've really enjoyed it.

So I went for the obvious just an album I've enjoyed a lot recently.

I hope you all enjoy it.

I Still have the original Tracy Chapman album on CD from 1988.  I think everyone bought it - it was a great album.

This one sounds pleasant enough, but the songs lack the punch and impact of the earlier stuff.  This was the "difficult" third album, and IIRC it sold poorly compared to the first two.

Only 3/5 from me.

A decent album but it sounds like it's made up of songs that failed to make it onto her previous album, Crossroads. 3/5

I like her voice and like the odd song that I hear on the radio but a whole album was too much for me , I have to break it up , could have done with just a couple great tracks 3/5.

Don't know any of the songs and there's no obvious single.

It's very pleasant and polished sounding. Middle of the road. Smooth.

Melodies are OK, but there's nothing very memorable or engaging on first listen.

Wouldn't be a big fan. I found it a bit dull.

I have her first two , which I enjoy a lot. Somehow missed this one, so looking forward to hearing it.

I have this but hadn't listened to it or anything else by her in years.  There are some decent melodies and it's very slick but nothing there that really grabbed my attention.  It's recorded well , much like her debut album which I really liked. Indeed this made me dig my copy of 'Tracy Chapman' out, it's a 4/5, this one I think 3/5.

I have four of her albums but not this and there must be a reason ... its just not a patch on the first two . Nothing bad but nothing particularly attention grabbing . 3/5 for me

I thought it was pretty good. The last track in particular. The trouble with Tracy Chapman I think is that she has never bettered her first album. I reckon 4/5.

Have to agree with some of the other comments

Her 1st album was superb

2nd wasn't too far behind

This is just "average" compared

I didn't mind the tunes, but I just find with Tracy Chapman's voice it's all too needy/pleady/moany sounding. I remember being very impressed with 'Fast Car', it was something different. But after a while, her voice just started to grate, something I can't get past.

I understand why she's so popular, I'm sure she's a quality 'act', not for me though.

2/5

Edit : There appears to be 2x4 stars

The original 1988 solo album is easily her best work for me and a seriously good album.

I'd give the original 88 album probably 9/10 but this one only 5 or 6 out of 10, having tried and persisted with her later works a while ago, to not really like them.
