I rather like Lowell Liebermann's piano music. His nocturne no.4 (linked last) is a spectacular work starting with a portentous melody over a simple falling ostinato. With a furious middle section that reminds me a lot of Ornstein's 4th piano sonata. The work directly below - Three Impromptus - won first score prize at the Van Cliburn piano competition in 2000. It's like Debussy, Scriabin, Shostakovich, Ravel all wrote a collaborative work. I don't mean to take anything away from Liebermann by saying that; it's like he perfectly absorbed the history of piano composition which he condenses into his works.

I also first heard it in my car! I remember wondering if I had heard it before as it sounded familiar. I concluded it must have been a Strauss song as it bore resemblance to the Vier Letzte Lieder. No, it was Gorecki. Now, I have three versions! Heartrending stuff, don't listen without a box of tissues nearby.
This cd is in my collection, got to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy this...Faure's Requiem is another emotional listen.

Enjoying these brass and woodwind ensemble arrangements of some favourite Beethoven orchestral works.

Tristan, in Furtwängler's studio recording. I first heard it when I was still at school, half a century ago. No one paces it quite like him, even if other Tristans and other Isoldes have come along since. The 1950s was an astonishingly rich period for recording.
