You may not know who Tim Eilers is as he is an unsigned artist. He used to specialise in Numan covers and his mash-ups in particular are stunning. The thing is that he doesn’t pick two similar songs to mash up and that’s where his genius lies. Seriously talented guy.

Tim arranges, produces, plays, sings, records, and produces and stars in the videos. The end product is worthy of a major label release but it’s just a guy on YouTube who by day is a Hollywood VFX artist (he worked on Spider Man 3 and Black Adam)

He won't get anywhere doing copies. The hard part is creating original work.

Matt Jessup is another guy you will not have heard of but you will have heard his synth programming if you have seen Numan live in the past 12 years.

Matt is a genius synth programmer and does great Numan covers.

The first one is Stories and the second is a version of Are Friends Electric but with his own lyrics where My Dad is Santa - hilarious. He arranges, sings, plays and records and produces everything himself.

Goldfrapp substantial remix of a Depeche Mode song called Halo. There is so much Goldfrapp in this that I am including it and hope that you enjoy it.

Madonna recorded this during the Music sessions with William Orbit but it wasn't included on that album. This is a truly beautiful song and Madge did it credit.

Though I tend to favour originals, I find that much depends on what you hear first. However, if one artist is a particular favourite, it definitely colours things for me.

Robbie Williams has a better voice than Kurt Wallinger and it's a pretty faithful cover. I'll always favour the original which I was a fan of before Williams got hold of it.

Then there's something like Don't Dream It's Over. Like many others (in the UK), I knowingly heard the Paul Young version first. However, I far prefer the Crowded House version. That's probably because it's got some nice jangly guitars in it. However, I ended up a CH/NF fan which doesn't help.

There's no doubt that my fandom influences me significantly, but here's a fairly rare example of me liking the cover better than the original despite having heard the original first.

Rickie Lee Jones' cover of Sympathy for the Devil
Robert Wyatt, Shipbuilding don't appear to have had a mention.
Edit...someone upthread mentioned Jacques Loussier and his takes on Bach. There is also a single album he made based on the music of Satie, which is superb. Give the one where he tried a similar thing with Debussy a body swerve though. But the Satie is a fine and inventive extrapolation, and an A star recording to boot.

Only recently I listened to such music, and I don't remember what it was. However, in general I like the originals more, of course, because often in covers we hear a more modern vision of the song, which can spoil the whole essence of the original.
