I used to have an ortofon MM in my Rega P2 and it fitted your spec (funky). It died and I ws a bit broke so bought a Rega Super bias, which is also funky. All MM experience though. Can't say how the brandss translate there "sound" up the chain.

I have the Denon on a Pro-Ject 2 and it would certainly satisfy your criteria of a lively, upfront sound (without being too harsh). Also has very good bass and unbeatable trackability. I bought mine from Germany - didn't know where to buy one over here. £95 is a good price - a rare hifi bargain!

Right, that's one each, (does yours count for the ortofon James

).

Yep, £95 is a good price, what with delivery it comes to £101, whereas the ortofon is £135 all in, so not much in it.

Oh yes...any other make I should consider in around this price range (of a ton)?

PS Should this be a poll?

You might be able to get a sumiko blue point for around a hundred. Light in the bass very forward and bags of top end. Does not play well with Rega arms

Denon is not forward. Go for the Ortofon

My v. first hi-fi.

Source The Source TT Oddeysy tonearm and DL103 into Cyrus 1 (it had MC input) and the first ever pair of black Tannoy Mercury's Beautiful .

!984 Sade stepped lifesize into the room singing Smooth Operator. You could hear every nuance and inflection. Sad old Bas***d. Been hooked ever since.

Well it seems most of you like the Ortofon.

Looking around, Stoneaudio is doing this for £128 inc. next day delivery.

Am I right in saying the Denon is a bit more laid back?

Like Fuck! I ordered "Next day" never came as a few other users on here will tell you, he just might have it in stock, but do not hold your breath:cool:

If you look on his site at the 1,000's of items "next day" :cool:how with an average stock holding of £18,000 and £102 in the Bank (last years reports)

for 18k stock thats three pairs of decent speakers

order from Origin Live or Walrus even if they do not have it in stock, its a better bet

Correct.

I found the sound v. musical and unfatiguing about as far away from a cdp as you could get.

If I was in the market I would buy one over the Ortofon which is not bad just a different presentation which you seem to prefer.

Thanx. Went to the origin live website which also lists the ortofon as £125 excl. deliv and the Denon as £99.

Unfortunately, you can add anything to your cart apart from an ortofon MC cart

See my siggie:

Project 2 Xperience TT, Project 9c carbon fibre Tonearm, currently using a NOS Grado "GF3 Super" into a Graham Slee GramAmp2Communicator MM PhonoStage.

Am currently looking into buying a pre-preamp (see my other thread) which may turn out to be a battery powered Pickering one, or Ortofon T-5 from e-bay...so that I can use the cart into the GrSl phono input.

Ant & Dave: ThankYou v much for steering me clear of stoneaudio man....i'll make up my mind re:cart and either go hifistore.co.uk or phone origin live
