Power Amps with Volume Controls

Recommended Posts

Anybody able to suggest manufacturers who fit volume controls to their power amps. The ones I am aware of are:

Shindo

Airtight

Leben

Any others?

Volume controls in power amps are passive devices.

You could add a passive attenuator to any power amp as long as there is space in the chassis.

If, however, you are using a pre, why on earth would you want to?

Mismatch between pre and power?

For the last few years I've used Shindo amps and just find the extra flexibility really useful, especially when trying out different kit and there is too much gain in the system.

You do need to look at the way it is implemented.

Simply adding a passive pot in series can have other unwanted effects.

In theory, perhaps, but in practice, if the pot is decent, and the amp's input impedance is normally high, and the preamp driving the power amp has a low output impedance, then the value of a pot on the power amp is useful.

I would also add peak power meters as something very useful on a power amp, and a peak clip light absolutely essential.

The Wavac I looked at had them.

Yes, I forgot about Wavac.

It is looking like it's mainly available on expensive Japanese valve amps.

Currently, a volume control that doesn't expose all of the hifi to an intrepid explorer.
