Shakey_Studioincar 256
I can't wait Graham, off topic but I was listening to my Tom Petty album you introduced me to in my car earlier So the painters choice of transport was questionable... "They didn't look that big in the pictures" They fitted lovely in mine! Now I really am keen.

orbscure 14,359
It looks very similar to the type of high gloss finish Kenrick Sound apply to some of their JBL/Yamaha restorations... and the colour isn't black or white either Carl... more like a high gloss dark rose Edited November 2, 2016 by orbscure

Thanks Graham, I'm quite excited, I should have them built for the weekend. 5 hours ago, meridian man said: What sort of painter does work like that. A very good one. Justin has been a personal friend of mine for years, he had his own custom shop then gave up on the stresses and now runs the paint shop side of a place called "New Forest Classics" that specialise in the renovation of E-type jaguars. He's got one eye, is quite short, no looker but he could paint a ring around you and you're thank him for it. Tbh I'm bound to be happy with him right now, that picture isn't even cut and polished. It was a very difficult descision, I felt terrible not restoring them to original so it had to be quite special. This is House of Kolor Root beer kandy. It's a high build, silver base coat with 7 coats of kandy lacquer. Finger print frenzy.. ive got another few pics but they're pics from his phone, I've been waiting to get themback to photograph them myself.
Shakey_Studioincar 256
Satin faces as original - Satin rears - They're pretty glossy in the pictures as they're still wet. They'll dry perfectly though. just flatting and polishing left then it's on with getting them home, still a little internal work to do and then the rebuild! still need to freshen up the drivers actually.. best pull my finger out. How are they going to act with 18w class A?
Shakey_Studioincar 256
Cabinets are back. I'll write the rebuilding of them up tomorrow whilst listening.

Shakey_Studioincar 256
So it feels like it's been forever, it's actually been 2 months today since the beginning of this refurb and I'm now listening to them. Friday afternoon I got the cabinets back, they had been at the painters for 5 days due to the curing between separate coats etc. So these are a few phone pics from when I went to collect them - So I nervously put them in my boot and drove back to my workshop, where I unloaded them and got all the drivers out ready. I have dyed these cones back to white, these have meanwhile been off to Wembley Loudspeakers on Grahams recommendation and been re-foamed. These guys did a great job, I was a little disappointed when I turned up to collect them as I wanted to have a look around at what else they had going on, I guess they were kind of busy so didn't wan to ask them a second time.. However they did do an outstanding job on my speakers. Worlds most expensive stickers were applied with the same care you would use removing a nuclear warhead. Next up was fitting the crossovers I had waiting, again another of Graham's recommendations they had been off to Paul Coupe to be reborn. Then it was in with the drivers... The tweeters were in a bad way, if you take a look on the front page they really were a mess. I sanded these back with 2000 grit and metal polish, they aren't 100% but they're far better than they were. The midrange drivers needed nothing but a little solder on one of them, one of the spade connectors had snapped in the past. It was at this very point that I realised I had forgotten to wad the inside of the box. So I had to strip them back down today and get that done! I though someone had thrown away my 'black bin bag filled with fibreglass' so I used a synthetic wadding to replace it, however this evening when I was locking up I noticed it on one of the top shelves in my stock room!! We'll see if it makes a big difference over time. I'm past these stages a fair bit now and they're in my living room on the Yamahas stands playing very nicel, all be it completely differently than the Yam's. Also to answer my own question about how they'll work from 18W class A? Just fine.
orbscure 14,359
They look super Carl and this thread reminds me of the warm glow of satisfaction I had when my JBL's arrived from Paul/RFC... fantastic job
Moko 3
They look stunning....how did you manage to get the woofer cones looking so white....with mine I used some fairly weak hydrogen peroxide but they are no where near as clean and bright as yours?
