System for sale

It's with a very heavy heart that I put my whole system up for sale.  A change in personal circumstances means I have moved abroad permanently...I originally thought I would go back to the UK so this wonderful system has been in luxury storage (i.e boxed up carefully in a spare room) for 2 years already.  It's taken me this long to put this pride and joy up for sale, but I just cannot export it as it would not make financial sense.

1. Wadia 8 CD transport. A beautiful machine from the digital pioneers. It feels like it's built from an iron block, the laser is fine. Digital coax and optical outputs. 800 GBP. Works perfectly.

2. Wadia 321 DAC.  This replaced the Wadia 8's sibling, the Wadia 15 DAC.  Beautiful DAC, all the specs available online...and this did a brilliant job connected to the Squeezbox too. The black glass top plate logo glows up. A real eyecatcher. Boxed as new. 1700 GBP.

3. Wilson Sophia 1.  I waited decades to get Wilsons and I bought these blind. They were better than I ever imagined and although revealing, did a great job with less high-res files too.  Incredible dynamics, detail and lifelike sound...and had no problems working wonders in a small room.  Gloss black with a few minor scratches as you'd expect for their age, but nothing really noticeable. They come with spikes and have had their binding posts upgraded to WBT terminals professionally - the original brass ones were too close together to accept larger speaker cable like my Transparent Super.  They also comes with the original black grilles - I had the silver/grey ones custom-made by Wilmslow Audio and it looks fantastic with silver equipment. 2800 GBP.

4. Modwright LS36.5 valve pre-amp.  This needs no introduction as it's known to be one of the best on the market.  Over 5000 GBP new, this one is around 6 years old I believe and I had a valve specialist in the UK perform the following upgrades:  replaced the 5AR4 rectifier with a Mullard GZ34, higher spec fuse and 4 capacitors. Perfect condition, boxed with remote.  The sound has brilliant imagery and realism, ideal in front of a SS power amp.  2400 GBP.

5. Pass Labs XA60.5 monobloc power amps. Super high end and ridiculously expensive amps from this top US brand.  Bought from another wammer and hardly used before I emigrated much to my dismay. Pure class A sound and a beautiful match for the Wilsons.  They produce such musical detail it's astounding with oodles of quality power.  They are RARE to find for sale in the UK and were imported from USA by previous owner...therefore they are 140v and come with a step-up transformer.  Boxed as new. 4500 GBP.

Courier options given on request, all located in Wells, Somerset.  I won't be back to give any demos until beginning of April, but collection is welcome before then.

6. Soundations AV rack. I saw this US rack online and was surprised to find ONE for sale in the UK.  I can honestly say I believe this is the only one in the UK!  A beautiful rack which I believe was $1300 when new in the USA. 4 brushed metal pillars with suspension metal rods for the glass shelves.  Allen key height adjustable with separate washes (a few threads have been shredded inside due to age).  I put rubber washes in between too for added effect.  Also has spikes. 350 GBP. Collection only.

7. Acoustic Panels/Diffusers. Bought these from a sound studio.  Two rockwool panels which I just stood up either side of the speakers. Just like in the picture, only red not blue (colour easily changed with your own fabric). 4 white polystyrene sound diffusers as in the photo.  They are separate, but can be stuck on the wall or ceiling altogether.  Also have 3 dark grey sponge corner absorbers in the package. 150 GBP for all. Collection only.

Hi Carl,

Firstly may I say that you have put together a truly wonderful system and I utterly understand and feel for you working the other side of the world and having to leave it far behind.

Given that from your profile you are I understand based out in Thailand, can I put forward a possible solution; have you considered approaching one of the many reputable high end dealers in Singapore with contacts in Europe to agree a part exchange deal on selling the high value components of your system whilst supplying you alternative replacement components in Asia and thereby saving the shipping costs in either direction.  I have a friend and work colleague that has a similarly high end system in Europe but also spends a large amount of his free time in Thailand so understand the dilemma of not being able to source well looked after quality equipment at realistic prices where you are based.

The very best of luck with your sale and hope this raises the profile for you

Ward

Hi Ward, that's an interesting suggestion.  I'll look up some dealers in Singapore now and see what their links to the UK are.  However, if they would p/x I would still need to fly to Singapore and handcarry an amp back...because the main reason for avoiding importing into Thailand is their 300% tax on used electronics.

Hi Carl

I will take the diffusors/panels.

Where are you located?

PM with payment details, if not too far away. I am just outside Cambridge, as I am sure you remember.

Damn it, I need a better job. Best of luck with the sale Carl. I heard a prior incarnation at Scalford, and even in that small room you could hear the potential, it sounded fantastic. Oggling the Wadia transport at the moment! Lovely system, you'll get something nice I'm sure.

I know those Pass Labs amps very well and can confirm that they are magnificent, the best I have ever heard. I would love those Wilsons!

Hi Gregg, the location is in Somerset...it's a fair trek from Cambridge but ok if you're on your way back from somewhere with an empty car I guess!  unfortunately there's no scope to meet at locations with this sale because if it's not boxed and suitable for courier, my folks are a bit too old to travel with it.  However, I will be there from 1-7 April.

Cor, I bet that's a nice system. Tragedy to have to break it up.

Hi Nick, even more of a tragedy that I only managed to secure the Pass Labs and Modwright a matter of days (i.e few hours listening time) before I moved and left it all behind.  But life is full of changes, just have to roll with it and enjoy it.

Obviously priority goes to a buyer who wishes to take the full system as it is!  As for me..I will try to replicate this same system as best I can second-hand in my new home country.
