We go on holiday to Florida soon, has anyone discovered any used hifi shops while they have been there?

For some holiday hifi porn or as a serious potential buyer? I see some good US prices on the vintage Pioneer stuff I keep an eye out for, but by the time you’ve added a step-up transformer to some, paid import duties and high shipping costs it doesn’t make economic sense. Would you be able to avoid any of these?

I suppose if you found something interesting that would fit in a suitcase, when you got back and were questioned by HM customs, you could claim you bought it for 10 bucks at a yard sale, to get round the import duty.

Won't work!  HM Customs and Excise will assign a value.  Believe me it will cost, as they will point out smuggling is a criminal offence.  Got caught years ago at Folkestone Customs, we had taken our niece on holiday to Spain.  She bought her Mum a bottle of Sangria and it took us over the limit.  Our caravan was searched from top to bottom, including the chemical loo.  They found nothing, because there was nothing to find.  Took me into the office and pointed out it was prosecution or pay the duty they thought was appropriate!  Believe me it wasn't cheap. All for a bottle of Sangria.  Hit them on a bad day and they can cut up rough.  It was so bad, when we were driving out of the gate, a Customs man stopped us and apologised for his colleagues actions.

sorry to disagree but different now, unless you routed via tax free state like a mate who bought it all in Andorra and was stopped . . . oops!

even back then I would produce a long list with receipts from different suppliers and every time they couldn't be bothered with the paperwork and waived me through.

personally I'd recommend declaring the 2nd hand gear at a reasonable $, they may not bother if it is cheap but you are following the rules they will not see it as a win (red channel may not even be manned)

Generally I agree, unless like me you hit an officious pillock.  His colleague on the gate said we had been taken apart by Hitler.  Whenever I've come back to the UK, found it's best to declare anything not within the allowances at a reasonable value.  The Folkestone thing is the exception, but still rankles. After 10:00pm with a two year old baby and a 12 year old girl crying, it lives long in the memory.
