RIP Jessye Norman

Super Wammer

I loved the falcon tone of her voice and was fortunate to have seen her in my yoof at the Met (Bluebeard's Castle).

She was famous for not allowing herself to be typecast (or should I say racially cast). Nevertheless, she grew up falling in love with recordings of Porgy and Bess. The first production of Porgy at the Met in 29 years began last week and last night's performance was dedicated to her.

She died aged 74, according to her family of septic shock and multi-organ failure secondary to complications of a spinal cord injury she had sustained in 2015.

Very sad.  I have a wonderful memory of her performance of some Richard Strauss songs at the Royal Festival Hall in London.  The first was so overwhelming we burst into spontaneous applause rather than waiting in a dignified way for the end!  Her voice was amazing, and never was the word ‘instrument’ more relevant to a human voice.
