An obvious follow on to your statement, my new free (thanks to the NHS) hearing aids. The difference between night and day.

The best hifi upgrade ever was getting my ears syringed.

If I did my whole system with those cables it would come to £197840. Shame, because I need 4m speaker cables and those only go up to 3m. Ah well, I'll just have to use something else.

Quad 306, and Technics SL-7

Definitely agree with the 306 Jake. Not really a looker, which might be why they tend to get overlooked, but silly value these days and probably still the sweet spot of the Quad 'current dumping' designs.

Think i may have badly phrased my original question, so I'll try again.

In your experience what piece of HiFi equipment have you owned that out-performed it's generally accepted reputation.

Probably the KEF101 - dear second hand now but still less than half the cost of a pair of LS35As but to my ears in a much higher league.  Similarly the Jim Rogers JR149 and 150 - almost pocket money loudspeakers in their day  that will give most bookshelf speakers a run for their money

For me it has to be the Hafler DH200 power amp - quite happy to put mine up against virtually anything -

Have to also mention the DH101 preamp - available for pocket money if you look hard enough and wait - and is a superb pre that does not let itself down soundwise.

A Sonos One, hard to believe how they’ve made something so small sound so good, particularly the bass. Amazing bargain.
