It's... just... the OP stated around about 100? and it kinda seems closer to twice that amount.

Indeed, however, similar to above, not really quite in the 'under £100' bracket though

Finished 2496 (AK4396) CS8416 DAC With Transformer+case

£63.45
Shipping: £23.79
tax on item wont be much at 63, so you'll be well under 100 for the same dac used in the Hegel Rost for example

If you have to pay VAT and import duty, factor in 25ish% including on the shipping!  I say if, as many Chinese sellers under-declare the value so you may get lucky.  But you may not!  Anything over £15 is liable for duty; they sneakily changed from £18 without announcing it.

Yep... they got me once or twice but I figure at 80 or so shipped, adding 15-20 still gets the op in the range he actually asked about... and for a dual pcm1794 with nice output section its a steal even with tax.

I can thoroughly recommend a Khadas Tone Board. They are available on Amazon for £86.99 with free delivery.

A very nice case can be bought from:

https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/aluminium-boxes-cases/aluminum-case-for-khadas-tone-board-p-13626.html

To my ears this sounds way better than its price and there are several reviews;

On behalf of my neighbour looking for a DAC. He does not mind spending just over £100...

Apologies if I've missed this but have you said somewhere what type of digital input your friend needs? It's likely not all of the suggestions made will be suitable...

Thanks very much for your thoughts and suggestions! Martin, I should have made it clearer regarding the use of the DAC; my neighbour is only going to use it for his CD Player. I'll update my neighbour when I see him! 👍 👍 👍

What digital output does the CD player have? Toslink, Coaxial, AES-EBU, or some combination?

It has a Coaxial Digital Output.

If it's for CD use I have a couple of options.

Kelvin Labs Bitstream DAC

Very basic small black box, built like a tank. Cost £200 in the 90s & well reviewed. Open & tuneful presentation.

Cambridge Audio DacMagic 2

Classic John Westlake design. Highly DIY modable & lots of positive reviews online.

Looking for £50 inclusive for either. I'll even include a decent coaxial digital cable to let your neighbour just plug in & go.

That isn’t a discussion for here is it? By PM or elsewhere but please leave this clear.
