Nice write up George. I was very interested in the pre & power version of these 211 amps in the classifieds towards the end of last year. I think @Audio Al bought them.

How are you getting on with them a few months in Allen?

'Fraid so....and I have also added a pair of Psvane 211 Acme valves (no roadrunner) and a pair of E 182CC drivers.

And it has got better but not 'burnt in' yet. Outgassing? Not me the valves. ;)

I've just contacted Transcription Audio, to ask about a pair of 211s for my Quad 2805s.  I am awaiting a reply.  I don't know if they would be suitable, but that is one of the questions I have asked.  But living in Plymouth, about to be incarcerated for up to 4 months, I doubt I could get to to hear a pair!

But any thoughts by users would be welcomed.  Not the rest of you lot, though. :D

So what amp did it replace George, I presume this is now in situ in your AN setup?
Apologies if I’m being presumptuous, but what I took away from the review is that this could potentially give you some of the AN magic on the “cheap”..?

Would also me interested to know how it compares to the Mastersound

I am still using the Pass Labs XA30.8 and XP22 as a really nice sounding SS. The Transcription allows me to use all the AN equipment I have and I had already sold my AN Conquests.  The Conquests were a great example of 300B amps but they do not have the drive of the Progression 1. The Transcription has the SET magic but with power and drive. As I mentioned in the review the Jinro and Tomei are more refined, detailed amplifiers. So yes a bit of the AN magic on the cheap but an awful lot and there are more refined versions of the Progressions and I suspect the monoblocks will provide better imaging. So far the Acmes are making another jump in sound quality but Psvane do make less expensive 211s.

The Mastersound is a lovely amp in all senses of the word. It looks wonderful and always attracts admiring glances and comments. The Progression I have less so but the dark wood/copper tops are special. Sound wise the 211 amps have a much better and tighter, faster bass. The top end sparkles and for me gave a very good rendition of cymbals and the subtle ways some drummers play them. The Mastersound has a softer bass and a more reticient top end. Not rolled off but less of that sparkle and zing you get in real life.

I could be wrong but if they were not artisan made and went through a dealer chain the prices would be at least double/treble. And please use a decent shelf as 55kg is a lot for an amp and the 10kg output transformers help no end.
