I’m glad you like the amplifier Nigel.I do think that you may be in the smallest owners club ever as Mactone is  a little known manufacturer in this country.

I started the Audia Flight Owner’s Club (note apostrophe positioning) last year on same basis and it built a bit of momentum, but I don’t expect the same to happen here!

Great amp.

I will be very interested in how it handles bass, especially at louder levels.

Do you have expectations? Of distortion?

I don't really do louder levels but may experiment for the team...

Does it get better than this?

I was rather enjoying the MH-300B with the Sugden A21a on pre duty. But Nick @Fourlegs has kindly lent me his Music First Audio Classic V2 and last night the MFA and Mactone were making very sweet music together.

I'm still keen to hear a tube pre in the mix but this is already sounding pretty special.

I went all around the houses with various valve preamps searching for the ultimate sound from valve power amps until I got a copper MFA and sweet joy resulted. The silver wound V2 MFA was just the icing on the cake but I was very happy to eat it.

I like TVCs, and in fact I use the one I have now (Glasshouse, but with better Sowter transformers) as an alternative pre, or as the volume control on the output of one of my DHT valve pre-amps.  But personally, yes it does get better than this!  A DHT pre is the obvious candidate, but they can be tricky beasts.  I did try a Townshend Allegri (AVC) and it was very good, but I prefer a valve pre.  YMMV, of course.

Hunting around for further info on pre-amplifiers, I came across this rather reassuringly enthusiastic thread from 2007 about the MA-300B which preceded the MH-300B and has similar specs but is less of a looker:

https://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=amp&m=124248

"An audiophile friend of mine got the Mactone MA 300B amp and was kind enough to bring it to my house to listen to it in my system and in my room. It was new and not even broken in. At the time I had Hovland Preamp and Art Audio Jota Amp (with KR 300BXLS tubes) driving my Avantgarde Omega Duo speakers. I was very happy with my system and was not at all looking to change/upgrade anything.

We listened my system approx 30 min. and took my Jota out and replaced it with the Mactone amp. I was astonished how much better was the Mactone right out the box from my beloved Jota. Better across the board; dynamics, deep and wide soundstage, inner detail, and unbelievable effortless live like presentation.

I was so impressed when it that I bought one immediately. After a couple of month of happy listening I simply had to sell my Hovland preamp and buy a Mactone XX-330 Preamp. Well, a combination and synergy between the Mactone amp and preamp is just unreal. Now my system was elevated to an other level. In an other league. "

"I have a Mactone MA300B and a Mactone xx-330 preamp. I found the review dead on with the fact that the Mactone throws a huge soundstage, is very true to the recording and has some of the most pure midrange I have ever heard. The bass is surprising for the wattage. I am using it with dynamic 3 way speakers rated at 89db (Shun Mook Bella Voce). I have heard the Bella Voces with Wavelength Cardinals, Highly modified McIntosh MI75, and the Lamm single ended (cannot remember their model number for the 18 watt Lamm) and the Mactone clearly beat the Cardinals, and held it's own agianst the other two. Gives you midrange magic with some dynamics. My brother heard it in my system and now owns one himself. I too have no interest in ever getting rid of it."

"I have had a MacTone X-21 and MA 300B preamp and amplifier for the past 3 years. The fact that Prior to that I changed equipment almost every 6 months. The fact that I have had them for 3 years is a testament to how awesome they are. Are have listened to equipment that are much more expensive then the MacTones but will not trade the MacTone's straight up for them. "
