Will there come a time when new music won't be issued on physical media???

I just wonder when the time will come that new music will only be available on the internet?

Surely it will happen one day.ūü§Ē

Did'nt they say that vinyl was history when cd arrived, Maybe there will be enough interest for it to continue alongside streaming?

It already is, some music is only available as downloads, usually mp3. CDs are much more expensive to produce. CD sales have plummeted to all time lows. In the USA only about 46m cd sales last year. This is under half of 2016 sales. The situation is similar in the UK.

But the Japanese market has not embraced streaming as much as we have. They sill love their CDs, SACDs, SHM CDs etc.

I don't think it'll happen anytime soon. There's still a very healthy interest in vinyl particularly in jazz circles with specialist labels like Jazzman, Gearbox, Pure Pleasure, Speakers Corner and Blue Note (Tone Poet and 80th anniversary) putting out some brilliantly mastered and pressed examples. I think I'm lucky in that 99% of my listening is vinyl and most new releases that interest me continue to be released on that medium. The death of vinyl has been prophesied for years and yet it still keeps going. The only limiting factors for the vinyl purist will be availability of original, good quality source tapes rather than digital remasters and the continued viability of existing vinyl pressing plants of which there are very few.

Probably at some point.   By then I will be plucking my harp on a cloud.
