Recommendations for an XLR out, USB DAC with volume control (possibly a remote)

Recommended Posts

I'm looking into USB DAC's to go between my Mac and some active monitors; the monitors are XLR and TRS connections, so ideally I'd like XLR out (but could go RCA to XLR) and it needs to have volume control and ideally a remote (but that's not essential)

Any recommendations; ideally c£200-£300 max, so happy to look at 2nd hand options

Needs to be USB as the Mac no longer has optical out

Try the Pro audio shops - or thomann.de

Loads of choice there, all balanced.

I know these have a very good following

SMSL M300 MKII DAC Uses AKM's Flagship Audio Decoding Chip AK4497, Ultra-high SNR, Ultra-low Distortion to Support DSD (red) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07PJQDSF2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_-JW-EbSXRB269

Thanks for teaching me how to suck eggs...

If I wanted to do that; I'd have already sorted a Presonus or Focusrite; but I'm asking about dedicated DACs rather than a USB interface...

A friend is raving about his. Says it’s really well made and sounds good. I’ve heard many similar opinions too.

There are a fair number of modern Chinese dacs from Topping, SMLS and the like that are rarely seen in the UK mainstream. They tend to be focussed on technology and extremely high (measured) performance which may or may not be to your liking.

Have a look here  https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/

The RME Dac is well regarded and at a higher price point either Prism Sound  Callia (designed for the hifi world) or Lynx Hilo which I use for work can also be recommended.

Just a litlle over budget but well worth you having a look is this

http://www.soncoz.com/sgd1.html#/

It has the full package tyou want and some additional facilities you might use later.

If you really do not want to spend more then this will offer a similar sound but minus the volume control etc .

As a little back ground these are made by the designer of the Khardas Tone Board which sounded very good and way better than it had any right to .

The Topping D70 has everything on your check list and works very well via USB and it’s other interfaces. It’s remote is a little plasticky but the whole package works very well as digital hub. It may be priced a little higher than your budget new but it is worth asking if anyone has one to part with.

Audiolab M-DAC will do the job, sitting here listening to Radio Paradise on mine whilst I type this, The M-DAC feeds a pair of powered Spendor BC1's and is connected XLR to XLR, superb

The OP said they needed the DAC to have a volume control though.

I have a spare SMSL SU-8 that meets all the requirements.

The MK 2 M300 has volume control which I have already suggested on Amazon within budget and cheaper than the suggested mk1 From the other site 👍🏻
