Your valve amps - what do you like most?

Recommended Posts

'Musician' OTL monoblocks having fun with Jim Rogers JR149 and 150, and some Thiels.

The OTLs were 220V and sadly met their end when I sold them on to someone who must have had unusually high British mains voltage.  Lots of smoke, apparently.  :(

I think you can safely say I love valve amps and cannot live with solid state. I currently own the following amps: Silvercore 833 monoblocks, own built Radford sta100 built as monoblocks, Radford sta100, Radford sta15, and a Yaqin MC10s. My wife has a pair of Mastersound 845 monoblocks so between us we've got 6 decent valve amps. That's too many and time I sold a few on. These are driven by my own build preamps-the Satchmo 3-and Dacs, currently an ESS Sabre 9038 pro and AD1862 versions-both have their strengths.

As I mainly specialise with valve amps in my AD Audio business, I'm fortunate to build or restore other decent valve amps. I've just completed some 2A3 /6B4G  monoblocks with Hashimoto transformers and have a constant stream of Radfords and Audio innovations amps passing through the workshop.BgKp1gN.jpg

just picking up on comments I read in the forum or elsewhere, KT120 equipped amps seem to be a particular sweet spot for higher powered designs. Maybe a good alternative to look for in addition to the more established 845 or KT88 designs.

thanks. Any suggestions on KT120 design power amps?

The best you'll get IMO is a Radford sta100 converted to run KT120s. It's quite a cheap and easy conversion. You can also run KT150s after conversion but personally I prefer the 150. The conversion increases the heater supply but I leave overall dissipation the same so you end up with a 100 watts a channel push pull amp that is not stressing its tubes

A couple of the five valve amps here: 211 with Psvane Acme 211s on a specially made Hifi Racks table

And just look at the lovely superb valves in this ARC Ref 110.

Where? With 8xKT120 they are so powerful they have to be hidden and caged and defintely not seen.

So valve amps don't do great bass? Simple, just add a couple of large woofers driven by 1400 watts! Even with a phone feeding the Radford sta 100 this set up gave astonishingly real renditions last night, just sounding brilliant with everything from Donna Summer to Hendrix
