Newbie question, but feel I need as much advice as possible before even thinking about taking the plunge, so here goes.

I currently own a 2015 Ford Focus 1.1 Ecoboost Titanium but always promised myself something much nicer, the MB A Class seems to fit the bill. It would need to be automatic around a 2017 plate.
Would I be doing the right thing upgrading, there are so many things that need doing around the house, but I keep telling myself I have worked hard all my life why not.

The A Class came 25th out of 27 in a What Car reliability survey, so expect a few costs.  They are also noisy and have an uncomfortable ride; avoid the AMG versions and big wheels.  An A3 is a better bet.

That would be a 3rd generation which ran from 2012 - 2018 .

Set a budget and look at other marques , the A class IMO looks a bit Astra-ish .

I had a couple of C Class MBs a few years back, as company cars.  Very nice. But glad I did not own them privately.  Servicing and parts costs not funny.  Plus you pay a premium for the nice Gunsight on the bonnet.

My son was considering getting the Mercedes A class but decided due to reliability issues and the fact he got a much better deal from BMW has ordered a series 1. Where we used to live one of the neighbours who was in the motor trade specialised in supplying Mercedes spare parts to the trade. I asked him why Mercedes? He replied he researched it carefully and of all the premium cars Mercedes are more unreliable than the others.

Good call on the new 1 class, I bought one last year and it’s been superb!

The infotainment system fitted is the best currently out there imo.. :geek:

If you want to and can afford it then yes, absolutely! As the answers so far suggest, what to buy is the tricky bit. A 4 year old vehicle of any make is likely to be at or nearing some work - a big service, cambelt (unless it has a chain) then other stuff such as brakes and tyres. So in picking an individual vehicle you need to be knowledgeable so you can mitigate any issues. Joining a marque forum can be very useful as there will be common issues that are less well known that you can be made aware of. The other issue though is that you aren't just buying another car, you are buying something to make you feel good, something that is a real treat and that emotional aspect makes it more difficult. If you are really sold on an A Class and nothing else will do then go for it but with eyes open, buy on condition and history and try not to get too hung up on on colour, trim etc. Good luck!

For a reliable car... and it is. It came second from top in the saloon class of What Car 2020 survey, that's the Alfa Guilietta. And it's classy looking too. If you get the 1750 TBI (automatic) it'll do 0-62 in 6 seconds

Oh yes. And there's a really healthy network of Independent specialists around the UK. They really know there business.

I just find Mercs to be bland, while the AMGs are too chintzy looking.

I think beauty is in the eye of the beholder on this one. I love the looks of the Merc and the trim.

Fair play. I would suggest, though, have a test drive. You'll see exactly owners love Alfas.

I work for MB and the new A class is an absolute awesome car. If you can afford the latest shape, go for either a 180 petrol or 180 diesel auto.
The Mercedes auto gearbox is the best auto gear box I’ve ever encountered in my 30 years in the trade and the 9 speed is now in Aston Martin. Don’t go manual. Less desirable.
best all round model is the sport premium if you don’t want the firmer ride.
I never believe any fuel figures but I drove the 180D for six months and urban 20 mile round trip gave me 55mpg. The old engine model did 36mpg.
Went to Cornwall last year and that new engine gave me 68mpg at 75mph !

If you buy from a dealer, take out the service plan because it will save you over 30% in service costs over 3 years.
