Excellent video on audible differences between speaker cables

So does this video put the cable debate to bed ?

It seems very conclusive no?

I think the only question left unanswered would be that playing music (many variable frequencies, volumes etc) rather than just a fixed impedance/tone would likely cause the system components to interact differently and in a more complex way. I.E. some speakers have large impedance rises at lower frequencies while others may drop to very low frequencies at much higher frequencies.

My understanding is that measuring music output is too complex so that would seem to be the only argument against the views put forward in the video. However; one still has to ask the question would those differences explain some of the claims made by manufacturers and users; doubtful I would have thought. Although I have noticed some slight variation in sound from using different cables its has always been fairly subtle and never as dramatic as many of the claims you often read.

He likes the look of Kimber cable, said 'it's like jewellery', which might explain why he's wearing it.

Why does he use this kimber 8TC cable if QED 79 strand is all you need ?

Only if we can measure everything that a human can actually hear.

I understand long term listening tests are still used because, currently, that's just not possible.

I don't think there's any doubt speaker cables can sound different, it's just a question of if they should, and why on earth do some charge so much for the privilege.

His head and arms don't match.

I reckon when his head and arms did match he used to get sand kicked in his face. So he sent off for one of those Charles Atlas offers at the back of DC Comics.

The problem is there are just too many variables involved for most cited differences to be valid for everyone. We all just dont all hear the same way so not repeatable for everyone.

  • Different brains
  • Different experiences
  • Different preferences
  • Different listening rooms and speakers
  • Different system componments

Hifi opinions are very much like reviewing food. If a group of 20 people go out to a restaurant for a curry, some will say its the best they have ever had, some will diss it as being poor, other will say its too spicy while yet others think its not spicy enough, etc. Here are just a few of many comparative tests that have been done over several decades! There was even the $Million speaker wire challenge which Michael Framer took up some years ago but his fellow opponent withdrew so it never officially took place.

Good question.

He made the point that the slightly better 8TC measurements could have no audible benefit.

So we can only assume it really is just because he likes the look of it.

All I can say is this video confirms my own finding. In my pretty decent system I've not been able to hear any audible difference between van damme black vs hifi series cables. None.

I have found that they do sound different but some cables are so ridiculously priced.  Maybe the uber mega constellation systems costing more than a house need these 'special cables'?
