Linn silver XLR to RCA - balanced, or unbalanced raw cable ?

Recommended Posts

If it can be confirmed that the output stage of Klimax Exaktbox is transformer-coupled it seems that the recommendation is configuration "6" in the chart, that is, a semi-balanced XLR cable ending in a RCA plug without connected screen.

Here we are: The Klimax Exaktbox featuring Lundahl output transformers

In contrast, the Akurate Exaktbox without (expensive!) transformers. It features both, RCA, and XLR, though.

My learning from this thread so far: An Akurate box should preferrably be connected either by unbalanced, or balanced cables, depending on the input of the amp. If one starts with an AEBox and upgrades from Majik to Akurate amps, the variant with balanced inputs appear like the superior choice. It can be already connected to the AEBox (after replacing the cables, of course) and clears the path to swap the Exaktbox for the Klimax version at a later stage, without need for adaptors or custom cables?

From this we can perhaps conclude that balanced output to balanced input and nonbalanced output to nonbalanced input will always be the best connection of equipment.

It is only when connecting balanced with non-balanced equipment that you should take some precautions

Check out the recommendation chart (link provided above) for the best configuration of the connection.

Agreed @StellanH. But wouldn't this lead to the conclusion, that we should prefer Akurate amps whith XLR inputs over Akurate amps with RCA inputs (at least in Exakt systems), as Akurate and Klimax Exaktboxes both provide XLR outputs? When I look into the used market, RCA inputs appear to be way more popular, though, which is puzzling at least.

Well, first of all it is preferred to use either balanced or non-balanced at both ends.

The reason for the abundance of non-balanced connectors is two-fold:

1) non-balanced connectors are cheaper than balanced connectors and 2) balanced connectors are judged to be unnecessary outside the studio (or stage).

This may also touch on another more "sensitive" topic: which connection is best sonically: a balanced or a non-balanced. I am sure people have very different opinions on that, as you can see on different "high-end" hifi producers. Some of those refuse to use balanced connectors because they are convinced that non-balanced are sonically better.

For example: A badly constructed balanced connection would probably give worse results than a properly constructed non-balanced connection, even if a balanced connection should be better "on paper".
