Urika II - optical output

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I know the Urika II has an optical output but have never seen it discussed.  Linn presumably thought there was a use case for it or they wouldn’t have put it there.  Does anyone use it and if so what for?

Yes I did for a while into my Hugo for headphone listening and also for songkorder recordings but this is no longer necessary

I’m unsure how to configure it without an Exakt connection.
I used Konfig to tell Urika Ii I was using a Krystal cartridge

From LinnDocs:

  1. RADIKAL INPUT - For connection to the RADIKAL LP12 motor power supply. 1
  2. EXAKT LINK- For connection of Exakt products (Linn DS/DSM with Exakt sockets/speakers/ExaktBox).
  3. TOSLINK DIGITAL OUTPUT - To connect to an external Digital recording device 2
  4. EARTH GROUND - For connecting the unit to an earthing terminal

1 The RADIKAL will only supply power to the URIKA II when the turntable is rotating.

2 This will provide 192k/24bit PCM stream. Note that this connection cannot be used on its own, the Urika II MUST be used with a Linn DS/DSM with an Exakt-link connection for control and operation

Yes, as akamatsu quoted it is designed for recording.  The Urika II will only work when plugged into an Exakt port on a DS/DSM as it gets the clocking externally along with the DAC functions.
