Hay guys

Do any of you have a good idea what a pair of 1992 ATC SCM50's would be worth?

There have been no upgrades done to them. I am guessing pre SL drivers. I know they still have the Vifa tweeter, not sure if the midrange is the S version

They might be worth more than you think. Definitely worth finding out the serial number and contacting ATC as I know of at least one person who got his larger actives brought bang up to current spec and had the amps serviced and he was very pleasantly surprised when he received his quote. Of course you've got to get them to and from ATC HQ... but if they come with original boxes then you're good.

@Mark Holder That at least one person is probably me. The courier charge for my ATC150 pair in their huge crates for overnight delivery to ATC and then back to me was £67 (ATC must have special rates!!!!). The total bill from ATC for bringing my ATC150 actives up to current spec was around the £2k mark. The value of your 1992 speakers might depend more on the state of the cabinets than anything else. Drivers etc are easily fixed or replaced but cabinets are difficult to refurbish.

I would of thought a pair in good condition, ie decent cabinet but no upgrades but looked after, would allow for some bargaining with the owner. I would definitely want the amps serviced given they are 30 years old. Also I would contact Atc for prices for anything that might need replacing, servicing or upgrading.

Then you have some material to bargain with. But that's me!

I bought a pair of late 90's active 50's last year, as said previously definitely judge condition of cabinets as being the main criteria/guide for price.   I had been already been in contact with ATC regarding upgrade/servicing/overhaul etc., so had all that info/price being committing.  Had the drivers upgraded/serviced to current spec and most of the amplifier components replaced too.  Allow around £1.5k for the above work at ATC if required, however be prepared to wait they might be very busy so check timescale before confirming work/returning units.  If you need any more info then send me a PM.

Hi Mark

In the late 90s I bought a reconditioned pair of 50 Actives from ATC themselves.  At home I found them not to my liking as they were far too much in yer face and I wanted to push them 20 ft further away.  This was in a 320 sq ft room so it wasn't that the room was too small for the 50s.  This was a shame as I'd been hankering after these speakers for years.  I sold them to a neighbour who loved them.  His room was a little smaller but "harder" than mine regarding flooring and furnishings.

You say no upgrades - do you mean the individual speakers you are considering have had no upgrades since new?  The  active 50s have been through several upgrades since then with all (I think) drivers being updated and the amplifiers.  However if your room suits these early ATCs I'm sure they'll be great as they are built like tanks and last for ever.  Getting them up to current spec would be VERY expensive though.  Hope this helps.  Peter

Value of 1992 ATC 50As?  No idea now but take a look at HiFi Shark.  They have ads from all over the world, some bargains, some rip-offs and some scams, but you should get an idea of what others are asking.  Also look in their Sold/Expired section if you find very few in the main For Sale list.  Good luck.

That doesn't seem to be the case according to those who have done it.

As mentioned in my earlier post, any worthwhile upgrade is likely to depend on the condition of the cabinets.  If they are in very good nick then to bring SL amp pack actives up to current spec will be around £1.5k. Only the would-be purchaser can then decide if it is going to be done.

You surprise me.  I know of one owner who bought his 50 actives new and has spent more than the initial cost on upgrading drivers and amp as and when newer versions released.

We were talking about the cost of upgrading old ones to current spec. You're now talking about something else.

No, I'm talking about getting an old 50 Actives (eg 1990s built) up to current (2021) spec.  This will involve new tweeters (old ones are Vifa, new ones are ATC), etc. etc

That doesn't mean old speakers will NEED upgrading, but if you want them to sound as good as new ones, that is what's needed.
