Miles Davis Kind of Blue is a great example. It was originally released I believe in both stereo and mono versions, both mixed from the (long lost) master tapes. Davis apparently preferred the mono.

I've got a relatively early pressing of the stereo and some later versions and the mono. The mono obviously doesn't place instruments spatially, but it's like sitting further back in the room at the performance and still has a 'live' feeling. The stereo makes it far too obvious that it's a stereo system. Some bits are hard left or hard right in the mix and it just doesn't sound natural.
