Do you have to puncture the glass envelope to fit them?

Dunno, not being an expert, I think you have to fit them like a ship in a bottle technique.

Not quite foo , they will help to make microphonic valves a bit quieter .

But on already quiet valves I've found they do very little .

Belt and braces job. All valvesare microphonic to a certain degree. Tube dampers are designed to suppress this, but TBH, if you've got a valve that's microphonic to the extent that it's audible, junk the bastard anyway.

On some valves in some amps does nothing.

On some valves in some amps works very well indeed.

On some valves in some amps produces negative effect

Have experienced all 3 - I use herbies dampers on my power amps (a result) but wouldn't use dampers on my Shindo preamp.

Er - hope that helps - ie there isn't a one size fits all answer.

I use them on my 2A3's -big bottles that have a nice ring to them in naked form. In most cases people fitting damper rings are trying to stop a problem that doesn't exist and will have no real impact on a 'truly' micro-phonic tube.

I dont know if mine are micrphonoic or not.

If I did get some to try it would be on my 2a3's

What impact does micrphonics have on the sound ?

I think I've got some spare ones (silicon rings) you could try - I'll PM you when I've had a look. As to the impact they have on the sound, nearest I'd be able to categorise it as being anything from a faint echo/reverb to a type of feedback. I don't actually mind some microphonics in the system - I treated all the tubes in my integrated (5 signal and 4 output) and in the end felt I preferred the sound without them, indeed I liked it best with pretubes that had failed a retailers microphonics test standard.

Also, please remember that in many instances military tubes would not be tested for microphonics unless that was required for their usage - indeed many a military tubes would be failed domestic/industrial ones that just meet a minimal military standard.
