ATC's new SIACD - Amplifier/CD/DAC

ATC%20SIA%20CD%20Player-all%20black.jpg

The new, compact, SIACD expands on, and is styled to match ATC’s range of stand-alone electronic

products for home installation. The SIACD is built to the same design and manufacturing standards as

the company’s internationally renowned professional audio products.

Overview

New class A/B “grounded source” 100W/Ch. power amp stages offering class leading performance

High performance DAC with USB, coaxial and optical digital inputs

On-board CD Player

Headphone amplifier with front panel mounted output

2 x stereo line level analogue inputs

1 x stereo line level output

Black or silver anodised finish options

6 year warranty*

Hand built in Stroud, UK

This new product is designed as a simple yet versatile onebox solution for D-A conversion, CD playback, pre and power amplification duties. The SIACD is housed in rugged yet elegant chassis, only 315mm/12.4” wide. Styling compliments the rest of ATC’s range of outboard pre and power amplifiers and the product is available in both black and silver brushed and anodised finishes.

Whereas many other manufacturers’ favour class-D power amp technology for compact devices, ATC have based the power amp design on the class A/B circuits employed in their highest performance professional, active loudspeakers, thus ensuring the highest possible performance of this vital element of an all-in-one player amplifier. In this revised design, ATC engineers have made further improvements to their discrete MOSFET output stage to give vanishingly low levels of distortion, very wide bandwidth and a reduced idle temperature. Maximum output power 100W per channel, continuous, into 8 ohms with both channels driven. The resolution offered by this approach is simply above and beyond what is available from most ‘high-end’ stand-alone power amplifiers, let alone ‘all-in-one’ player/amplifiers.

The preamp/DAC stage features two, line level, stereo, analogue inputs and three digital inputs. Both analogue inputs are equipped with rear panel mounted, RCA/phono connections. One of the two inputs also features a front panel mounted 3.5mm jack input for simple connection to portable music players. The USB, SPDIF and optical inputs are mounted on the rear panel.

The DAC utilises Wolfson’s WM8740 chipset and is compatible with 16 to 24 bit word lengths and sample rates up to 192kHz (coaxial and optical digital inputs only). Excellent digital clock recovery ensures signal integrity is maintained even with poorer quality digital sources and the SIACD. The USB input is compatible with word lengths up to 16 bits and sample frequencies up to 48kHz and is galvanically isolated from the digital source via a high performance transformer.

The SIACD headphone amplifier is specified to drive a very wide range of headphone sensitivities and impedances. It features very low distortion and noise and an extremely wide and flat frequency response for best possible performance. The headphone output is front panel mounted.

The chassis is constructed from a combination of steel and aluminium and uses constrained layer damping to control panel resonances. The front panel is machined from an extruded section of 13mm/0.5” aluminium alloy with a brushed and anodised silver or black finish. All the user controls are machined from solid aluminium.

I think the previous models look a lot nicer IMO, the new ones just look like the generic Wharfdale Diamonds with the slightly curved cabinets.

The new ATC tweeter is a great addition though.

ATC's new curved SCM7 and curved SCM11 passive monitors -

Designed for small to medium scale stereo and multi-channel applications, two new models incorporate a wholly ATC designed and built tweeter, and stylishly curved cabinets

Featuring the new ATC designed and built 25mm soft dome tweeter, updated bass/mid drivers and crossovers housed in a curved, laminated cabinet, the first of a new range of ATC closed-box passive loudspeakers has arrived. The third generation SCM7 and second gen. SCM11 are the first to employ ATC’s landmark SH25-76 tweeter, developed to satisfy the company’s long-established rigour in drive unit engineering

SH25-76 Tweeter

Sharing technology with the renowned ATC soft domed mid-range drive unit, the new tweeter employs a unique dual suspension system suppressing rocking modes even at high power output levels. The ATC configuration of a short edge-wound voice coil in a long, narrow magnetic gap ensures exceptionally low distortion throughout its operating band and removes the need for ferrofluids, which can dry out over time, compromising performance.

A complex, shaped, soft-domed diaphragm extends high frequency range and offers a smooth off-axis response. The tweeter’s 15,000 gauss (1.5 tesla) neodymium magnet has a black heat-treated top plate, which dissipates heat away from the voice coil to maintain high power handling and low power compression. A precision-machined 5.5mm rigid alloy waveguide provides optimum dispersion, a flat on-axis frequency response and resonance-free operation.

New Cabinets and Systems

Establishing what is to be a new style for ATC’s most competitively priced range of loudspeakers, the new SCM7 and SCM11 benefit acoustically and aesthetically from a curved cabinet construction. Braced and laminated for high rigidity and damping, the curved enclosures in real cherry or black ash veneer also impart a strong impression of design quality. Improved crossovers featuring metallised polypropylene capacitors, large air cored inductors and ceramic wire-round resistors offer superior power handling and clarity. Each new model exhibits an impedance curve free from low values, presenting an easy load for amplifiers of 75 to 300 watts. The SCM7 and SCM11 are designed for optimum performance without the grille – although a ull-length perforated metal grille, finished in anthracite grey to match the drive unit face plates, is supplied. According to tradition, each model number represents internal cabinet volume in litres.

Third Generation SCM7

ATC’s SH25-76 soft dome tweeter is joined by the company’s highly linear 125mm mid/bass driver. It features a 45mm soft dome - exceptional for its horizontal dispersion of mid-band frequencies - and a huge 3.5kg high-energy magnet system, which includes a 45mm flat wire voice coil, meticulously milled and formed by ATC. The magnet system and a carefully weighted doped fabric cone assembly contribute to the SCM7’s wide bandwidth, impressive dynamic range and convincing bass output - all from a tiny seven litre cabinet.

Second Generation SCM11

The new SCM11 features ATC’s SH25-76 with an ATC CLD 150mm mid-bass driver incorporating a 45mm soft dome. Constrained Layer Damping is a driver cone technology exclusive to ATC and represents a step-change in driver-to-system performance. Advantages include reduced harmonic distortion between 300Hz and 3 kHz, an extended frequency response that eases constraints on the crossover filter slope, and improved off-axis response.

ATC-11-speaker_no-grill-190x300.png

Manufactured in-house, the new SCM7 and SCM11 offer the ownership of a hand-built ruggedly engineered speaker, world famous for musical accuracy and high power output. Like all ATC products, the new models are backed by a six-year warranty.
