ATC's new curved ATC SCM19 passive monitors launched -

Designed for small to medium scale stereo and multi-channel applications, ATC's new model incorporates a wholly ATC designed and built tweeter, and stylishly curved cabinets

Featuring the new ATC designed and built 25mm soft dome tweeter, updated bass/mid drivers and crossovers housed in a curved, laminated cabinet, the first of a new range of ATC closed-box passive loudspeakers has arrived. The second generation SCM19 monitors employ ATC’s landmark SH25-76 tweeter, developed to satisfy the company’s long-established rigour in drive unit engineering.

SH25-76 Tweeter

Sharing technology with the renowned ATC soft domed mid-range drive unit, the new tweeter employs a unique dual suspension system suppressing rocking modes even at high power output levels. The ATC configuration of a short edge-wound voice coil in a long, narrow magnetic gap ensures exceptionally low distortion throughout its operating band and removes the need for ferrofluids, which can dry out over time, compromising performance.

A complex, shaped, soft-domed diaphragm extends high frequency range and offers a smooth off-axis response. The tweeter’s 15,000 gauss (1.5 tesla) neodymium magnet has a black heat-treated top plate, which dissipates heat away from the voice coil to maintain high power handling and low power compression. A precision-machined 5.5mm rigid alloy waveguide provides optimum dispersion, a flat on-axis frequency response and resonance-free operation.

New Cabinets and Systems

Establishing what is to be a new style for ATC’s most competitively priced range of loudspeakers, and joining the new SCM7 and SCM11 launched earlier in the year, the new curved SCM19 monitors benefit acoustically and aesthetically from a curved cabinet construction. Braced and laminated for high rigidity and damping, the curved enclosures in real cherry or black ash veneer also impart a strong impression of design quality. Improved crossovers featuring metallised polypropylene capacitors, large air cored inductors and ceramic wire-round resistors offer superior power handling and clarity. Each new model exhibits an impedance curve free from low values, presenting an easy load for amplifiers of 75 to 300 watts. The curved SCM19 monitors are designed for optimum performance with the grill in place – although the difference in performance without the grill is minimal. The metal grille, finished in anthracite grey, fixes to the cabinet via hidden magnets. According to tradition, each model number represents internal cabinet volume in litres.

Second Generation SCM19

ATC’s SH25-76 soft dome tweeter is joined by the company’s highly linear 150mm mid/bass driver. It features an integrated 75mm soft dome – exceptional for its horizontal dispersion of mid-band frequencies – and a huge 9kg high-energy, ‘Super Linear’ magnet system, which includes a 75mm diameter flat wire, underhung voice coil, meticulously milled and formed by ATC. The magnet system and a carefully weighted doped fabric cone assembly contribute to the SCM19’s wide bandwidth, impressive dynamic range and convincing bass output coupled with very low distortion as a result of the unique ‘Super Linear’ motor system.

Manufactured in-house, the new curved SCM19 passive monitors offer the ownership of a hand-built ruggedly engineered speaker, world famous for musical accuracy and high power output. Like all ATC products, the new models are backed by a six-year warranty.

Establishing what is to be a new style for ATC’s most competitively priced range of loudspeakers, the new SCM7 benefits acoustically and aesthetically from a curved cabinet construction. Each new model exhibits an impedance curve free from low values, presenting an easy load for amplifiers of 75 to 300 watts. The SCM11 is designed for optimum performance without the grille – although a ull-length perforated metal grille, finished in anthracite grey to match the drive unit face plates, is supplied. According to tradition, each model number represents internal cabinet volume in litres.

Second Generation SCM11

The new SCM11 features ATC’s SH25-76 with an ATC CLD 150mm mid-bass driver incorporating a 45mm soft dome. Constrained Layer Damping is a driver cone technology exclusive to ATC and represents a step-change in driver-to-system performance. Advantages include reduced harmonic distortion between 300Hz and 3 kHz, an extended frequency response that eases constraints on the crossover filter slope, and improved off-axis response.

Manufactured in-house, the new SCM11 offers the ownership of a hand-built ruggedly engineered speaker, world famous for musical accuracy and high power output. Like all ATC products, the new models are backed by a six-year warranty.

ATC at CES 2014/Lone Mountain Audio - If you are heading to CES in Las Vegas then you can catch up with Doug Sax and absorb some of his vast knowlege of music and audio. ATC's demo room, shared with Antelope Audio is in Suite #29-227 of The Venetian Hotel and Casino.

“I don’t think there’s a better mastering engineer in the world.” So says ten-time GRAMMY-winning engineer Al Schmitt. “Doug Sax is all about the music. He’s got integrity, he’s got great ears, and he’s a great guy.”

Mastering is the final step in the recording process, the last chance to make a good recording great, or a great recording even better. Practitioners of this fine art are a specialized breed of engineer; their work can be likened to that of a skilled microsurgeon, making delicate moves that enhance the vision of the artists and producer in subtle but important ways. In this era of increased competition and new methods of delivery, their role is a vital one.

Born in Los Angeles in 1936, Douglas Sax was fascinated at an early age by the sound of the 78 rpm records in his father’s collection. Ironically, trumpet became Sax’s instrument of choice; in fact, his main competition in high school came from a fellow native by the name of Herb Alpert. Although he established a career as a symphonic trumpeter, he never lost his interest in the sound of recorded music, and so, with partners Lincoln Mayorga and older brother Sherwood Sax, he opened The Mastering Lab in 1967 – the world’s first independent mastering facility. Featuring all hand-built equipment designed by Sherwood, including custom cutting lathes that have become legendary, the studio was soon turning out many of the top hits of the ’70s, including The Wall, Who’s Next, Nilsson Schmilsson, the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers and the Eagles’ eponymous debut. Sax also established a pioneering set of procedures for testing and evaluating audio components by ear.

In 1970, Sax and Mayorga realized a lifelong dream with the founding of Sheffield Lab Recordings, an audiophile label dedicated to producing state-of-the-art direct-to-disc classical and jazz albums. Through his body of work, Sax has inspired a whole generation of engineers. Sterling Sound’s Greg Calbi recalls that “Doug’s records always had a certain sound that everybody loved but nobody else could achieve. There was a sonic image that he planted in my head, and I’ve always aspired to make my records sound that good.” Adds fellow Technical GRAMMY recipient George Massenburg, “Doug Sax’s work opened my eyes to the possibilities of how great equipment could better serve great artistry, and opened my ears to how good a recording could actually be.”

Sax continues to play an active role in the contemporary music scene, mastering many of today’s top albums, including Rod Stewart’s GRAMMY nominated As Time Goes By and the recent surround sound SACD release of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, building on an already legendary track record working closely with notable engineers such as: Al Schmitt, Bill Schnee, Kyle Lehning, George Massenburg, Bruce Botnick, Nathaniel Kunkle, Ed Cherney, Val Garay, as well as many designers of new gear and studio designs.

ATC's new SIACD - Amplifier/CD/DAC is reviewed by Andrew Everard in the February 2014 issue of Gramphone magazine -

“This is a no-compromise ‘music centre’ for those willing to look beyond the mini-system norm, hand-built in Britain, backed with a six-year warranty and capable of delivering the kind of sound for which you might expect to need a separate CD player, amplifier and power amp. It’s really not hard to see the appeal of this package…”
