unintended1 1,612 Posted January 17, 2019 (edited) Went out with the camera for the first time in a long time today. Saw a Snipe feeding along the edge of a lake. Snipe by Keith M, on Flickr Edited January 17, 2019 by unintended1 5
Bazzer 7,658 Moderator Posted January 18, 2019 Great shot Keith , get a few Snipe or they may be Jack Snipe in the fields but never get a good look at them .
Bolts 1,715 Posted January 18, 2019 Smasher that Keith, hard to see Snipe with binoculars or scopes let alone getting photos like that.
unintended1 1,612 Posted January 19, 2019 Thanks guys. It was a nice thing to see on my first trip out in a while According to the exif data it was only 8.5 metres away. Before I'd seen one in real life I always thought they'd be bigger. They're surprisingly small birds.

A Jack Snipe has different markings and a shorter bill. Not that I've ever seen one. Before I'd seen one I always expected a Kingfisher to be bigger as well. Bolts 1,715 Posted January 19, 2019 Yes smaller, shorter bill and different markings on the eye - if you come across them they fly away in a bobbing, up and down fashion...apparently. I’ve seen them at Barnes a couple of times but at a distance in the hide.
