I've heard them referred to as "portable record grinding wheels" due to their tendency to have very high tracking weights and poor stylus shapes contributing to record wear. Also, any mode with an auto-changer option will be spectacularly noisy due to the ball race main bearing.

Ok, so a late-70s Japanese DD perhaps won't be as trendy, but it'll sound much better and (with a new stylus or cart) won't kill records.

The Dansette was a very poular but not very good sounding TT.

The De Luxe now, that was much better. It had a tone control.

It consisted of nothing less than a felt curtain that was drawn across

the speaker.

I think you can do better.

If you really want one of these portable type players, look for a Hacker Gondolier or Grenadier or similar. These were higher quality models and used Garrard changers rather than the BSR monstrosities that featured in most Dansettes.

Also, the Hackers can often be found with their optional extension speaker which allows full high fidelity stereophonic reproduction!

The Aiwa Music Centre was well rated.

Vinyl and Uni digs might be a bad combi. CD with tuner (ideally DAB & FM) with an aux in would be better. You could then add a preamp and Project at a later date if you are brave enough, and in the short term play your MP3 through it. A Dansette is definately for looking at but not playing records with unless you have a pile of 2nd hand 45s that you do not treasure.
