This has always been a banter comment between me and my brother and now me and my daughter ..
Well I’ve just had a “ there’s stupid and then there’s ME”
Timeline !!!
While cooking tea put the system on to warm up .. which doesn’t take long when they’re in a cupboard.
Have tea
Put some vinyl on !!
Oh put Shoes on and put the bins out for recycle able waste and glass ,,
Note to self !!! We need to cut down on the alcohol that red bin is getting heavy !!!!
Have a fag while I’m out there .
Come in and listen to some music while sat at the breakfast bar ..

Well !!!!! It just sounded a bit dull …!!!
Give it ten minutes to warm up a bit more
Have another glass of port and another fag ,,
Came back in and sat down,,
There was just not the normal sparkle to the top end
WTF I’ve got a tweeter out that’s gonna be costly
Got up to check stuff out ….
If you’ve been here you know there is a panoramic mirror on the wall .. as I walked up I looked in the mirror

F..k me ,
I’d got my beanie hat on over my ears that I put on to put the bins out .
Took it off ,, all was good in the world again, well for me anyway .
“”There’s was stupid and then there was me”
Or is it an age thing ..
You know it’s that time when the pension people get in touch lol !!!
What’s your stupid moment ???

I dont mind admitting that I wear a woolly hat in the house. Like you when I let the dog out, I pull it over my ears. Often I end up realising that it's still over my ears when listening to tunes.
Of course it should now be above the ears making them stick out slightly (for improved stereo effect). Its gotta be an age thing but it makes me smile. :)

My B&O Beosystem 5000 used to reside in the dining room. When we had dinner guests, past a certain number of bottles of red wine, I would manage to forget that the CD had to be inserted into the CD tray upside down, and then get annoyed when it wouldn't read any discs I put in it.

This happened on more than one occasion.... 😣

My stupid moment was yesterday at my bake off. Harv had asked if he could plumb his Krell 400 integrated into my main system to see how it sounded with the MLs. We plumbed it in and fed it with the Lector and it sounded great so we left it in for several hours. Near the end of the BO the Krell came out and I reassembled my system, changed input to streaming,...... No sound, bugger must have dislodged something plugging the CDP ICs back in the Pre. Spent several mins checking stuff all controls/lights showing as they should. Take the streamer of pause........ No sound, oh Shit what's wrong, scratch head, recheck, fire it up still no sound.
Ahh, that's why there's no sound... It helps to actually get sound if you turn the power amps back in. Dohh🙄🙄

I started to put more effort into Jazz a few years back. Had some extra time as I was between jobs so bought some records and gave them a spin.

Really felt I was getting sucked in to the Miles Davis album, played both sides, picking up the vibe….

Putting on a record I knew better next, realised had been playing Miles at 45rpm 🥺

I took my Wadia 830 cd player round to a friend to show it off.
Plumbed it in to his system.... No sound. Checked cables, amps. Still no sound.
B#gger, must have got damaged on the journey. :(

Got it home later, thought I'd check it out one more time before finding someone to fix it.
Plumbed it in, automatically used the cdp remote to increase the volume as it resets to zero when turned off........ Doh. 🙄

A friend was extremely stressed about moving to a new flat, and the solicitor had some thorny problems to fix. As all this dragged on she got into a right state. One day she took the washing to the bathroom where the washing machine was, put it all in the toilet and pulled the chain.

Playing all the way through a new unfamiliar record and bemoaning the rather cold sterile sound with a lack of bass, only to work out later I hadn't turned on the active bass speakers of my stereo, so what I was hearing rolled off below 250Hz.

Wondering why I wasn't getting any treble from NS1000, only to find out small person had turned the adjuster pot down.

Around 1983 I'd not long moved into a new cottage and was fixing up an fm aerial to my new tuner. I was in the loft pulling through the excess cable when I heard a crash downstairs. When I went down to investigate there was my new tuner dangling from the ceiling and the rest of my system in a heap on the floor.........

In the early 80s I was downstairs in the demo room of a small independent hifi shop. I listened to some expensive Beyer Dynamic headphones and cranked the volume up when playing some Deep Purple. Suddenly one of the staff charged down the stairs and yelled, 'turn it down!!'. I had not switched off the connected speakers and he was trying to sell gear to customers upstairs.

Oh and great thread title.

How silly of you, Miles Davis is much improved at 78rpm :p Or better still, with the speaker cables unplugged...

Actually, the whole "playing at the wrong speed" thing is getting to be a more common occurrence here, with a lot of modern pressings not specifying the playback speed on the label, which is extremely annoying.

My "doh" moment was a few months ago - put an LP on the TT, lowered the cueing arm, turned up the volume on the amp (yes, it was switched on), sat back, no sound. Realised that I'd forgotten to actually cue the arm on the record, it was still sat in the arm rest...

🤦‍♂️

This has happened more than once (I am not at liberty to say how many times ) I get a new Pi or equivalent to use as a player and complete all the settings or so I think .

Everything goes smoothly nice clean install player picked up under LMS and so as i always do to test out put Radio Paradise on so there is music playing . Look on the screen and see the time bar moving so perfect . Then go to the system and nothing coming out , check the wiring check everything is switched on and see that all the power lights are on and the DAC / DSP unit is showing it is getting a signal and is locked still not sound . Then remember that LMS sets volume control to using volume control and on first boot up this is placed a zero move the bar along and music . Go in and reset the volume control to 100% so it just line out and controlled by the systems volume . Tell my self yet again to make sure that next time I will fix the volume settings first , Do I ? Err No .

Done the 'speed' thing more than once. I remember sitting down here with a good mate and playing the entire of one side of a Floyd live LP. We both remarked that it sounded a bit dull and not very good at all. Then realised it was a 45 and we'd played it at 33. The. Entire. Side.

Worse, no alcohol was involved.

Happened twice ... home cinema system - blu ray inserted into Pioneer sacd/dvda/blu-ray player, surround sound powered up, projector on ... nothing ... pitch black, no sound, no sign of life on the Pioneer (even though it had allowed me to insert disc). 30 mins of checking plugs .... pressing buttons. Then realise I'd sat on the remote, and selected "pure direct" mode which is for CD via analogue out, switches off display, hdmi out, digital out etc. Pants.

That hurts.

Reminds me of a former Wammer who dropped a Roksan TMS 3 getting it out of the box. He rang them and sent it straight back in the same box for repair.

Cheers BB
