Go to a bake off... Bring amp home 100+ miles and go to set it back up and realise you've left the bloody power cable there (and it's one of the old-skool Leak ones so I've no spare's).

What a plonker!

John to the rescue! He's posted it to me, so I'll have my tunes back soon 👍

Bought a rather large pair of Monitor Audio standmounts back in the eighties from Tottenham Court Road . Great discount and ex dem . Salesman says we have no boxes . I should have thought logistics . So standing outside the shop with each speaker under my arm . Hailing a taxi to Charing Cross proved taxing and then getting on a crowded commuter train with two bulky speakers didn't make me popular . Thank god my Mum agreed to pick me up from the station otherwise that would have been an interesting mile walk home
Ha ha that reminds me of a similar situation where I went shopping for a pair of trainers on whiteladies road in Bristol and accidentally ended up buying my first ever pair of proper speakers instead, biggish mission floorstanders... Unfortunately I didn't own a car or drive at that point... Or actually live in Bristol as I was visiting friends for the weekend from Coventry.

My friends weren't too happy about storing them for 3 months until I found a mate to drive then to Cov. I should also point out that this was the 2nd bit of kit I'd ever bought and I didn't actually own any electronics at the time :censored:

The first in case you were wondering was a 12inch active sub which I connected to a shitty micro system 🤯🤪

A few birthdays back I was given an LP by a friend that I wasn't particularly keen on. I know, I thought, it's probably from the HMV in town as it's got one of those security stickers on it - I'll swap it. So, in I went. To be smart I went over to the racks to see if they had the LP, even ducking to look in the cupboards underneath the racks. They didn't and also the LPs there also didn't have the security stickers on them. No harm done, I thought, at least I've avoided the embarrassment of taking it to the wrong shop.
As I leave the alarm goes off! The security guard and the manager come over. "What's in your bag?" "This is going to look bad." I explain weakly.
In the end they believed me (I must have an honest face) and allowed me to swap the LP. Turns out the door I walked in had a faulty tag detector, the one I walked out of did not...

That could be read as you were not keen on your friend. :)

Went to the garage to fill up the car ready for a journey to take the mother in law to hospital for a checkup, Filled the car and went in the shop to pay then returned to my car only to realize I'd lost my keyless ignition car fob..
Looked absolutely everywhere, under the car, in the car, back in the shop, on the pump etc searching for 40 minutes until we had to push the car off the forecourt, I was seriously stressed because this was also my spare fob..

My Mrs had to come and collect her mother and take her to hospital while I had to wait for recovery to take my car away drive then wait for a locksmith to come and break into my car when it arrived home.

about 10 mins before the recovery truck arrived I was pacing up and down the road when a lens cap fell out of my pocket 'I don't remember having a that in my pocket? patted myself down and found my key fob in a small pocket in the hideous cardigan my mother in law gave me for my birthday the week before.
I hate cardigans and will never, ever wear one again.

This has always been a banter comment between me and my brother and now me and my daughter ..
Well I’ve just had a “ there’s stupid and then there’s ME”
Timeline !!!
While cooking tea put the system on to warm up .. which doesn’t take long when they’re in a cupboard.
Have tea
Put some vinyl on !!
Oh put Shoes on and put the bins out for recycle able waste and glass ,,
Note to self !!! We need to cut down on the alcohol that red bin is getting heavy !!!!
Have a fag while I’m out there .
Come in and listen to some music while sat at the breakfast bar ..

Well !!!!! It just sounded a bit dull …!!!
Give it ten minutes to warm up a bit more
Have another glass of port and another fag ,,
Came back in and sat down,,
There was just not the normal sparkle to the top end
WTF I’ve got a tweeter out that’s gonna be costly
Got up to check stuff out ….
If you’ve been here you know there is a panoramic mirror on the wall .. as I walked up I looked in the mirror

F..k me ,
I’d got my beanie hat on over my ears that I put on to put the bins out .
Took it off ,, all was good in the world again, well for me anyway .
“”There’s was stupid and then there was me”
Or is it an age thing ..
You know it’s that time when the pension people get in touch lol !!!
What’s your stupid moment ???
I wear 7 woolly hats and a duvet when I listen to Focal speakers. :coffee:

Mine was today.

Neil drove all the way from Wales to pick up my Krell FPB600. Listens to CD No.1 very happy. Asks for CD No.2 I change it over and pop upstairs to write down details of CD No.1 (Ray Lamontagne - Ouroboros). I come back downstairs all very quiet. No sound is the complaint - grab rc and toggle vol up. Nada. Errr.....brain freeze moment. Why is the vol not working. Looked at pre - bright blue light on...what's that I think...er....oops its on mute; turned it on and totally forgot to turn it off again. Neil becomes happy again. The end.

I can remember a hi-fi related fuxation, when my Primare amp went up to Sumiko for a repair I slotted my lovely 1990 Sony FE-540 ES amplifier for surrogate duties. I plugged in all the cables and switched on, spun up some tunes and was rewarded with an extremely quiet squeaky rendition of Bauhaus 'Kick in the eye' (ironic!). Checked the cables again and the same result, tried a couple of other tunes - same thing. Swapped out the DAC to the Pi - same thing.
Great, another knackered amp and my ol' faithful to boot.
I went without tunes for a couple more nights and decided to re-investigate why the amp had gone belly up, torch out and head stuck behind the equipment rack and noticed that I'd plugged the cables into the MM phono input...
Duh.

I offered to record a tape cassette onto CDR recently. The recorder absolutely refused to record. I couldn't find the handbook but eventually managed to source one online. Still no joy! Eventually I realised that the CDR discs were for computer and not suitable for music. I could only source the correct type of disc online and, because of the recent Royal Mail strikes, they took a week to arrive. I inserted the correct disc to find it still refused to record. I tried swopping round the various interconnects, no joy! Then a lightbulb moment! It turns out on my pre amp you can record from 2 to 1 but not from 1 to 2 Swopped the leads around suddenly it works. Altogether a week and a half had passed from receiving the tape to eventual success.
I felt the phrase "there's stupid then there's you" very much applied to me just then.
Andy

Hmm I really do have far too much to contribute to this thread

A new preamp arrived and was playing nicely with everything else... And whilst admiring the remote discovered a mysterious button... h/t... Couldn't resist finding out what it did 🤦

It turned out to be a volume bypass for integrating into a home theater. An expensive way to learn that the volume control attenuates rather then making it louder.

I was lucky though in that I only blew 2 out 8 drivers and none were beryllium but costly enough 🥺

I wonder if Henry will mention what he did with a boxed AT-33PTG MC cart while selling it to me. I'm not suggesting he's stupid mind, he's bigger than me.
Well I know you got years of service out of it, so whatever I did couldn’t have been terminal! 😂😂

I had a Exposure XVII preamp that had a issue with the phono stage, low volume with a muddled to sound so sent it off for repair, a few days later repairman phoned to explain that there was no issues whatsoever so I paid the minimum fee and it was returned to me and lo and behold exactly the same issue.
Phoned repairman to see wtf was going on and he sent me the test report with channel balance and other measurements. He enquired what cartridges I was using with the preamp. I was using MM carts on a MC phono stage!
I had seen a review of the preamp which was MM and assumed that they all were and with no details on the input I didn’t consider that they also produced them with MC. Duh.

To reanimate this topic, a word to the 'wise'.

Before wasting spending about three hours taking everything apart, putting it back together, checking endless valves and interconnects and shifting speakers sideways, backwards and forwards, when your stereo image and soundstage seems to have done something very strange, it is well worth checking that you haven't accidentally knocked the mono/stereo switch while changing a mains cable.

Oops.

But if you plugged a dac into MM wouldn't it be loud and bassy not quiet and squeaky?
