That Amoeba store - my last trip there I spent $240! All on vinyl which I brought back in my hand luggage - no way was I trusting it to baggage handlers.

I can see me bringing a fair few more records back over the next 12 mths or so.

Great store!

Just seen there is another mentioned in SF - I shall check out Aquarius too!

Not that the author had actually been to all of these shops because the steer on the Tokyo Tower Records was pure assumption. A bad one too, it's shite. I live 10 mins walk away and it's the last place I'd go record shopping in the area. Recofan and Disc Union, all over Tokyo and Japan deserve to be on that list. There are hundreds more too.

Nice list all the same.

Bought from Piccadilly in Manchester on many occasions. The sales guy in the Jazz section, even while it was busy, wanted to strike up a conversation on what I was into and made some good suggestions on things to try. They got my repeat custom. Several more good shops in Manchester too.

Not on the list but superb for music and vinyl is Brussels. I did a lot of work in Brussels and it was always a pleasure bunking off and going shopping.

Pretty sure I went there on your say so, Jeff.

I think it was not long after your visit, as the Zappa shelves had taken a big hit

Shame about the check-in procedure, but I suppose they get a lot of thefts. Too many druggies hanging around outside. After hearing so much about Haight-Ashbury in the 60's, It was a place I had to visit.

Glad I did :peace: .

Yep, serious $$$ damage and ditto on carrying the precious cargo in yer hand luggage.

Haight Street is just great to wander down, some verrrrry funky bars, food shops & errrrrr :peace: shops

And Golden Gate Park is just across from Amoeba.

I didn't find it any cheaper than UK, but the choice/variety is mega.

Tip of the vinyl purchase iceberg.......

I've been going to the SF and Berkeley Amoeba's for a few years now (I'm lucky enough to have to work there once a year) and the Berkeley one appears to be less picked over than SF branch. As with every record shop, it's often about getting lucky with what stock has recently come in and being prepared to dig for a reasonable amount of time (difficult when you realise the sheer volume of used records) but I've had some proper bargains over the years (Orig Doors S/T for a dollar!).

On my last trip a few weeks ago, I finally found one of my long-time wants- Jellyfish's 'Joining A Fanclub' box set for 60quid (this has gone on fleabay for £150+ on the rare occasion it's up).

Only did the LA Amoeba once and it's as overwhelming as it looks....

Record City cnr Paradise and Sahara Las Vegas--miserable git that runs it --but cheap as chips and rare stuff in top condition.

Really friendly guys in Ameoba. Guy that served me even recognised my accent and told me that he had walked the wall around York when he visited England.

He also commented on one of the records I was buying saying it was someone he had never heard of until recently but once he heard, he rated it as one of his fave records that year.

I think there are 3 - LA, San Fran and Berkeley ...... What I found interesting was the mix of people in there - and browsing the records, there were actually more women than men. At one point the aisle I was on had 6 women flicking through records and not a single man (we were in the rock section too).

Which one did you visit?

Was desperately trying to get hold of a USA only 2 colour vinyl, 500 ltd edition, Midlake album.

Even got onto their UK PR company....and they can't get it.

Anyway, got in touch with Amoeba SF and the lovely Kathy put my name on one.

RESULT!
