So i have a valve preamp that came with jan Phillips 5963 valves.
I'm thinking these were put in in place of ecc82.

Is the 5963 valve any good?
They appear very cheap in comparison to ecc82.

Thanks

5963 might replace 12AU7 in most applications but maximum limits for 5963 are bit lower than 12au7, I doubt microphonics were ever factory tested for this tube as these tubes were made for computers , 5963 has definitely better quality cathode and only limitation is the max. voltage.
I'm not sure about prices of the following but these would be a better option IMO to replace 12au7
8514 better grid quality, lower grid leakage,etc...
6189WA is a US version of ECC802S but less tightly specified than ECC802S, I'd say much better tube than 12AU7.

Don't forget E182CC, 7044 and 7119 variants. These are SQ valves that are indeed a step up, unfortunately in price as well as quality.
