Went round to Sam and Sodders last night, ostensibly to pick up the Sonneteer phono stage so I can demo it in my system. It looks to be a fascinating combination of fully adjustable phono stage with an inbuilt DAC and ADC, to allow digitising of vinyl, which I’m looking forward to having a good listen to. However it rapidly developed into a cracking evening of listening to music on some amazing kit.
Both black and silver discs were spun through the Puresound L10 and 845 monoblocks into standmount AE Reference speakers. The resulting sound was very different to my usual kit, I am a hopeless fANboy after all, but no less enjoyable with the rhythmic aspect of music that I prize coming through strongly. Helping this was a powerful and tight bass which propelled things along nicely. We had a bit of banter about head nodding and foot tapping in time to the music but in truth it was hard to resist.
Lots of different styles and genres were thrown into the mix, Nickel Creek, Otis Taylor, Ian Drury, Talking Heads, and the (literally) incomparable Wevie Stonder, among others. All handled with aplomb.
I was really impressed with the fit and finish on the kit too. The veneers on the AE speakers are beautiful, I like a bit of wood, and the Puresound CD player is really classy. The remote control looks to be hewn from solid metal and has a lovely rounded design.
A great time and a pleasure also to meet Ian, one of their friends up visiting. I had earlier that evening been admiring an artwork on the wall showing an outline drawing of the Palmer and the Unison S9 that Sam runs, thinking where did they get something that appropriate. Turns out Ian is a graphic designer and produced it for them. :^
Thanks for the hospitality guys and would be happy to return the favour one day. I can’t promise a curry to die for though…..
Cheers
