Nice article.
I'm an acoustic consultant so the names used in the article are well known as the pioneers of acoustics (Beranek, Sabine et al) but are also from a time long ago.

I'd suggest that the deisgn on auditoriums/concert halls etc have now gone full circle thanks to more advanced understanding of what to measure and model and in particular more powerful computers. Pretty much everything is now modelled on computer but it's useless unless the acoustic consultant understands how to relate the physical properties of the ideal sound for the particular purpose with the numbers produced by the computer model.

If anyone is interested in having a play there is a relatively cheap room acoustics package you could buy for $75 ish called CARA.

Superb! Acoustics are everything when it comes to non amplified instruments because they rely on the venue to 'shape' the sound.
You're aware of the adage in audio especially in the home and venue is not to by kit to iron out the inconsistencies of the room acoustics, treat the room first.

Excellent article, thanks. Not only was I fascinated by the challenges of updating an existing space - as opposed to building anew - but I loved the reminders of Bernstein’s genius, especially the concerts mentioned at the end.
