Quite a significant new service was rolled out to the UK by everyone's favourite HMRC averse online retailer yesterday, although it's been available in the US for a while.

It's especially good for us vinyl sads. When you buy an LP or CD, Amazon automatically adds a 256k mp3 version of it to a library on your Amazon account which you can then access via the web or a mobile app. So if the LP doesn't come with a download code, you now get a free digital version.

Best of all, it trawls your purchases all the way back to 1999 and adds any qualifying purchases to your library automagically. Nice.

HiFi Trade?
  1. Yes

Also means I don't have to spend time ripping any Cds I buy to use on my phone/in the car as well as the vinyl I have bought.

Just over 100 albums available to download now, result! :D

Kind of amazon to send me emails about all of this, taunting me with the news that previous purchases are now available to listen to. Just a shame they don't see fit to check location databases before sending the emails.

Doesn't appear to pick up all your purchases ever. Probably Amazon resellers like zoverstocks are missing maybe. Even then I've bought many many more than 57 CDs from them over the years.

There are probably one or two record labels not participating, and no you definitely won't get what you bought from zoverstocks :D

I can see the few mp3s that I have bought from Amazon in the cloud player. I can also see mp3s of CDs that I have bought since yesterday (all 2 of 'em). Other than that - nothing. I've bought hundreds if not thousands of CDs from them over the years.

The cloud player did flash up "searching for autorip eligible CDs" for a few minutes, but nothing new appeared.

I conclude that this service does not work.

It takes quite a while when you've got a big back catalog. They send you an email when it's completed telling you how many have been added. Very slick.

Ah, right. I may have launched my own little denial of service attack then :p , I really do have quite a history with them (whisky + credit card = awesome combo for random ill-advised purchases).

edit: just thinking about it, if it works this may even ressurect some CDs that have gone AWOL over the years which I never got a chance to rip. 256 kbps would be a lot better than no56 kbps.

Excellent! Will probably mean that I buy more vinyl (instead of the CD) in the future! Thanks for sharing.

Jesus Christ, why has nobody yet volunteered to send me their UK credit card details so I can log in and claim my mp3s?

Spirit of the Wam indeed....

Well done Amazon. This is a cracking idea. Shame about the Zoverstocks orders but never mind.
