might be getting a pair of AN-e's and just wondering if the AN stands are really essential ( i know i need stands)

would a home made pair be ok, i know i can make them better, and stronger than the AN ones but i think the AN ones look crap to be honest, would rather design my own to the same height as the originals but look a bit different. any thoughts?

I think that you do need good stands for ANs, but for me the definition of 'good stands' includes well-made, heavy DIY jobs that raise the speakers up to the right height. As long as you anchor them well, they certainly don't need an AN badge on the stands.

Good stuff Adam, these are component stands bolted togther anyway so cant see what is special about them, have heard people saying these must be used to make them sound right, foo i suspect. I can get really heavy well made stands done here in work and can paint or powder coat to any colour or spec myself.

thanks again

I made some similar ones for my old Js. They never quite founded the same. But I'd try some something solid XFs, they'll tighten things up significantly. Mike (pedal faster) got rid of his AN stands in favour of XFs with his Es and I much preferred the XFs with my Js than the original stands.

I think that I have those same something solid stands sitting unused in a corner here . . . I'm sure you have your welding kit out already, but maybe pm for pictures (they do look the business, but I'm satisfied with my 'vanilla' AN stands).

I have Bourney's AN Js and something solid XF stands. I haven't tried AN stands as a comparison. But the Js sound bloody good on the XFs. Maybe try making a similar open frame too?

Those DIY black AN E's were originally mine. I haven't tried the standard AN stands with them, but I did upgrade to the Something Solid XF from a pair of wooden stands that I was originally using and improvement was huge! I would definitely seek out a pair of the XF stands if you can - well worth the money. Here's a pic of those very AN E's with the XF stands:

The stands are made from solid bars so are deceptively weighty. Highly recommended

Think I read that the height of the stands is more important than their construction because of optimising the frequency in room due to floor reflection (perhaps reinforcing the mid bass?). Maybe this is the reason for the oft quoted mid-bass hump with these speakers? :dunno:

I have mine on 600mm AE stands as I would get into all sorts of problems with the AN stands in my man-cave; they seem to work just fine, and bring the tweeter just above ear level which I find to be a good thing, and no mid--bass hump at all. But then they are much taller and mental heavy - 30kg a piece or so, in fact they make the AN stands feel like they're made of tissue paper!

Great stuff guys thanks, I have the dimensions and will make mine the same height width depth etc, but they will look fab

curved stainless steel tubes, filled with lead or shot on thick steel plates and sone exotic wood.

going to veneer the speakers with zebra no or something exotic and spray clear lacquer.

The boxes were home made (not by me) to the original AN drawings. They are made from Russian Burch Ply. The guy who I bought them from was the guy who made them. I am pretty sure that he is the same guy who now trades under the NaimlyLinn name:

Top bloke btw.

Hope this helps,

When l had my home dem of Js, Mario (the Audionote guy), saw my Skylans ( filled with kitty litter no less) for the Harbeths and said use these, rotated 90 degrees and he said that they were perfectly adequate, in fact l am using them now on a pair of Js and they sound fine, so in conclusion AN stands do not seem to be essential.

Ron, as long as they are high mass and roughly the correct height (tweeter at ear level at the listening position), you will be fine.

If you can build something in tube / box section so you can experiment / mess about with the quantity / type of filling, all the better.

It really is that simple.

Martin.
